thanks dave but id already seen all that ive got it bookmarked i was under the impression that the barrel inter coolers had a series of tubes like a steam boiler not a radiator im trying to figure out what size tubes they run through them

here's an awesome build up by Matt McInnes Home Brew Intercooler - IH8MUD™ Forums (http://forum.ih8mud.com/diesel-tech-24-volts-systems/178335-home-brew-intercooler.html)

fullmetaljacket thats some impressive intercooler unfortunately i dont have enough room for that though but it did give me another idea and some formulas Intercooler Theory (http://www.gnttype.org/techarea/turbo/intercooler.html)
Turbocharger Compressor Calculations (http://www.gnttype.org/techarea/turbo/turboflow.html)
but i still realy want to try to make a barrell type i just cant find any data on the inside tubes as in how many and what size as i have some 19mm 3.25mm wall thickness (12.5 id) and some 20mm 1.5mm wall (17mm id) but i think it may be too big for effective cooling then theres the question of cfm through put will it restrict the flow too much

these are some internals i found but im looking to see if there are any with just straight tubes like the ice box one

has anyone tried building an intercooler using a air con condenser as i found one in my shed and thought i could run water through where the gas goes and enclose the core block to run the air through

I say you may aswell buy one cos you have no idea of the condition inside the condenser, and i reckon the few extra bucks on a newey is worth it for the pieces of mind. Plus you can be certain that it will actually work efficiently.
Cheers
Dave

apart from all the dust (and glue) on the outside it looks in really good nick and i cant afford to go buy one on my wage but ive got what i need to make one its just all the formulas thats confusing

I'm thinking that because an air con condensor only has a small single line/core that the effectiveness of cooling air would not result in much gain if any Vs multiple core air to water or air to air CAC's. If you were to modify a protion of an air to air from a prime mover you would have a multiple core cooler with a larger surface area to disperse heat. I have a cousin in Kal that runs half a dozen road trains......hes sure to have an old CAC sitting around, if your keen I'll get his Ph num

i cant use air to air as the old 2hs apparently don't like the reduced airflow to the radiator and upon further inspection the air con core wont work as the fins for the air run both ways which will add heaps of drag on the air what company does your cousin own fullmetaljacket as in about 12 months im looking at transfering to heavy diesel after i finish my fitting machining apprenticeship

I cant remember the company name off hand ( ) but it is him (craig gammon) and his stepfather. I was seriously thinking about moving over there a few years ago and setting up the workshop, but family commitments kept me in Vic.
