My father has a boat with an in-board Perkins 4 cylinder diesel. He's currently using a manual pump via the dipstick hole to remove the oil when doing a change, but it's quite laborious and takes forever. Does anyone know of an electric pump that would be able to make this easier?

Visit your local Auto Elec (or boat fittings supplier) there are electric powered sump pumps available that suck the sump contents out thru the dip stick hole; or there are alternatives for wet sump engines where the sump plug is difficult to access. Most are detailed in the electrical catalogues, under pumps, bilge, sump, or even just oil pumps etc. Range from about $30 thru to $300, but I'm sure that you'll find one to suit!

Good Luck!

I know how your dad feels, I used to do the services on a mercruiser in a 50ft houseboat. After doing the manual hand pump a couple of times we got a cordless/corded drill fuel/sludge pump attatchment, it worked a treat and only cost 20 bucks or so.

Pumping it out when it's warmed up a bit would make a big difference from doing it cold.

Certainly worth modding the sump for a more suitable pipe/connection for a pump before installing into the boat.
