You’re talking about bumping up the maximum fuel delivery of your pump; you need to adjust the Maximum Fuel screw. No point unless you are bumping up the Boost aswell.
If done incorectly You risk over fuelling the motor witch on a diesel is a recipe for disaster.

If your not sure then the best bet is to pay to get it done properly and then you can have piece of mind that you keep your reliability aswell.
Not ever heard about turning the top of the pump to get more power.
The max fuel screw is what you are after and a 1/4 of a turn is a significant amount of fuel and without more boost would only make it use more fuel, blow more black smoke and more than likely have less power.
Do you have a boost gauge and EGT gauge? if so what readings are you getting? If not then definately don't attempt this at home or you will more than likely do more harm than good.
Any increase of the fuel screw will have the ability to use more fuel, however the extra power means that you don't need to push it as hard and it may even use less, this is very dependant on how you drive it.

Leave it alone, and put a new set of fuel, and air filters on it ;)

They weren't talking about a boost compensator were they? (if you even have one)
The compensator on my cruiser works with a pushrod that has a variable camber profile.. by turning the rod to different rotations it effectively changes the way the compensator changes the amount of fuel injection at different stages of the engine rev range etc... (all vaccuum operated and primative)
