The RTR Version comes with a 27Turn motor which is a little quick for Crawling but other then that they are great..
Might look into getting a 55Turn Lathe motor for it to reduce the speed and increase the Torque...

I just bought one and apparently it is at home waiting for me :) I also ordered some alloy lower links from the US for $18, including shipping, as I hear the plastic lower links are not the best. Other than that they're supposed to pretty good, and like Magnet says stick in a 55T, this will be the next thing I order but I thought I'd wait until it turned up before I got anything else.
Cheers

I've also got a Bonzer V3 and have posted in that big 102 page thread ;) Mine will stay pretty much stock and is a basher for jumps and a bit of fine in the dirt. Great value for money but the fact it's not a crawler is why I got the AX-10
Heres a couple of pics of both for comparison.

Thanks for the advice boys i have mine and i love it i have changed the spur gear on the engine tothe 14 tooth and have put the front lokcer tonight but i wont get to have a play with it now till saturday afternoon due to stocktake tomorrow and saturday morning. but i think that in the next week or two i will order some softer springs and triming the front corners of the bumper or ordering the new x1 crawler body to allow the front wheels to clear better but after that i am going to look at a 55t motor anda better ESC but for now i will enjoy it and the time with my kids.:truck:

I put the locker in the front and the 14 tooth pinion and it is still way to fast, here's an indoor video. I took it down the bush for a run in the rocks and although it goes Ok it does need the 55T motor and softer shocks, I'm also going to star cut the foams in the tyres to let them bag some more. I'll also be trimming the front corners and should get that 55T motor tomorrow, I'll put the 24tooth pinion back on the stock motor and use that for bashing and the 55T for crawling with the 14tooth.
This is locked front and rear and 14 tooth pinion

Buy a Set of Proline Flat Iron or Moab Tyres and get memory foam inserts... there BRILLIANT.. the Memory foam keeps its Shape no matter how bad the terrain gets.. M3 Tyres are the softest compound and are really sticky but wear out fast...
HPI Offers a new range of Crawler motors called the X- Series..
I have an X-35 (35T motor) in my HBX Bonzer and it has a Shed load of Torque...
Check out the X- Line of HPI motors if your in need of a Budget crawler motor.. I think there around $40 compared to the $60+ of the Integy Pro Series..

Alos, when the upgrade bug bites, which it will, I have seen a lot of custom parts for these on ebay, and best thing is, they are also in Oz, so not risking the buying from overseas dramas you can sometimes get.

AX10's are great for those who want to give rock crawling a try.. there great value for money in the RTR version.. you just have to remember that a 27T motor is good for speed, not so good for advanced crawling..

Firstly - what is RTR?
is the AX10 still reasonably good at climbing?

With the RTR, you don't need to go out and drop money on softer springs. If you simply squash the original ones down till they flatten out, they will extend to a height that is just long enough to keep the vehicle at it's proper height, but they will be far softer.
Yes, this does bend the springs but trust me, they will now be perfect! They will end-up just right to maintain the original ride height, but they will be FAR MORE compliant and give great flex.
Also, don't bother spending the bigger bucks for aluminium linkages if don't want to. All you need is some 3-4mm galvanised wire from bunnings or the like. Place a single piece down the length of each lower arm and hold it in place with a single wrap of gaffer tape run lengthways down the arm and wrapped aroung from side to side. This will give your arms all the sterngth they need to stop buckling under load; for which the RTR arms are famous.
Moving the battery over the front axle will give yo a lot more weight up front, which is awesome for climbing up rocky terrain.
I have also put 2 strips of mag-wheel weights inside each tyre and removed the foams altogether. This gave me a hell of a lot more traction, but without the foams, you will find that it will traverse sideways across inclines, but you can seriously hear the tyres grip a lot more.
Believe me, these simple mods will improve the capability of your AX10 RTR by a heap and cost you very little, leaving you some cash to put in that 75 turn motor that we all know it really needs! 8>)
