100 series V8 questions....

Hey all.

I am thinking about upgrading to a 100 series and I have always loved the thought of owning a V8 4WD. The V8 seems to be good value at the moment with quite a lot of low km examples at good prices going around. I do have a few questions before I start looking though.

Is it worth trying to find a manual over the auto? I love my manuals but they seem rare and i'm assuming the gearbox isn't the smoothest.

Should I go for a late model or early model? Which one is better for hard offroad work? I am planning all the usual mods; big lift, 35's etc.

How does this engine perform offroad? Is it better or worse than a turbo diesel? I know it has good power and torque but I can't say I have ever seen one offroad.

Are there any common problems I should look out for?

And last, if anyone owns one of these can you post some pics or links to your shed? I am having a hard time finding people who actually own one.

I seem to recall reading somewhere that these engines do have a problem. Apparently Toyota was replacing them under warranty. Seems that the only way to define if the engine has a problem is to start it from dead cold on a cold morning and listen for it ticking. If it does then stay away. Don't know that Toyota would help subsequent owners. Perhaps some one else can pin this down better than me. Was enough to frighten me off.

As far as the manual ones go, apparently they used more fuel than the automatics and I think this is why the manual v8 option was dropped in 2005. I may be wrong though.

Personally I have only seen a total of 3 manual v8 100 series all up, so they are not what you call common.

Price is High to low, the bottom 4 are $32+ to $35, probably pic one up for $30K

Yeah I was looking at spending about 35k max and then getting a lift and barwork and exhaust.
