hey guys looking into buying a shorty it will be my first fourby and i was just wondering what mods people would do first. It will have a set of muddies but was just wondering if lockers or a lift kit would be better first. Also what is the spring over conversion like off road.Sorry if these questions are stupid but im totally new at the 4x4 scene.

G'day Wayna!

Matey I say to you get a set of muddies and a rear locker, even with stocky suspension the shorties will go just about anywhere bordering stupid then some. I would then go a 2'' lift (ome or similar).

A 2'' lifted shorty will drive 99.9% of places a sprung over one will. I had a daily sprung over shorty for years. I would never go down the road of a springover again, too much attention and a major headache come rego time for such very very little gain.........if any really apart from being at a good viewing point in traffic:D

I say the tyres first, then the locker, then the lift my 40 brother:D

thanx mate also what tire size would you recomend. i work in a tire store so cost isnt really worring me.I just dont know how big is really needed.I understand that the bigger will roll over obsticals better but being a newbe i figure i will wear out the smaller ones before i really tackle the harder stuff anyway.

wayna I run 33/12.5/15s. I ran them on a 3L 4 speed BJ40 with no problems at all. I also ran 37s for years running 4.88 diffs (crown & pinion ratio) on the same BJ...........was no different to running 33s with the 4.1 diffs.........ah the power of the those big 3 litres:D

I am sure someone will mention legalities of running bigger tyres, 33s is what I like to run though. They are a great tyre size for the 40s I reckon.

One of the yankee mags did a springover vs springunder not long ago actually.
The springunder drove everywhere the springover did but didn't fall over as the springover did in one section.

cheers

If you’re buying a cheep one first mod is

RUST RUST and you guessed it even more Rust
Get the angle grinder and welder ready and order some sheet metal.

I hope you find one without rust but be prepared anyway.

The one i am looking at is owned by my uncle and has been nearly all its life. Its never been off road other than in the paddock to collect fire wood. It has not rust that we know of or have found (im sure its there somewhere). and the best part is that it is only costing me about $200 cause my uncle can no longer drive it due to ill health.

ifi had my time again i would have skipped the 31" BFG A/Ts and gone straight to MTZ 33" Muds or even 35s if I did the suspension at the same time...

yeah, rust first though - I am doing a chassis up rebuild due to a rusty chassis cracking through - major bumber!

depending on your suspension now I would go the locker if its currently set up alright but mine was sagging (had race suspension not setup for clearance and height). Once again would have done a rear spring conversion (flip rear mount and relocate further back and then buy longer springs from a 60 or 75 series) and then raised front springs instead of going straight to a tyre place for suspension???

power steer would be nice too with the bigger tyres... mine came with air con, bucket seats, dual radios, cd player with stacker and custom consoles so was quite comfortable...
