View Full Version : a compressor not connected to your engine

ok...... a question for the mechanically minded...... i saw the post in the For Sale section with the belt driven compressor....... is there any way it could be hooked up to a 12 volt electric motor to run it? even if it was geared down a little........ I'd be interested.... cuz i have no room under my bonnet for one, and there is NO WAY i'm killing my aircon!!

for around $700-800 you can buy a 12v 3/4 Horsepower motor which will be enough to run this compressor.

Enough said? I have an a/c pump and was going to do the same but it's just not worth it. going a lower power motor gives you less volume or less pressure (depending how you gear it) it's cheaper to buy a compressor already built. other option is to tap in to your power steering pump much like a hydraulic winch and run a hydraulic motor which in turn runs the compressor. This was the path i was going to go but i just figured a place i can mount my pump.

If ya gunna spend big $$$$ setting it up why not just buy a 12v elevtric compressor, I know they pump heeps more air then the electric but how often will u actually use it for any thing other than pumping tyres

is there a spot for a PTO shaft from your transfer case?,

Do you have a Diesel or a Petrol Motor?

Tony get onto endless air and see if they do an auxilary bracket to suit your model and buy the bracket from them and make your own compressor.
They are very easy to make and pump heaps of air, run it into a reserviour and you will have the capacity to run air tools if you wanted.

Mate,your'e a fitter!!.i thought a while back about mating up a chainsaw engine with an aircon pump,and a small reciever.shouldnt be too much hassle.totally portable.

i am going to do some research into hooking up a small hydraulic motor to an aircon compressor and running it via the power steering pump. even if i only use a normally open electric valve, or a 3-way hydraulic valve...... i'll only ever use it to air up, or the clean my air filter. I can get hold of old fire extinguishers easily enough.......

you can get 12v/24v electric motors made to suite, amps/volts/rpm, and they don't cost 700-800 bucks,
i know because i work at a electric motor factory in bayswater, they are around 250/400 depeniding on what you want.

have been thinking of doing it myself, but am just waiting to acuire a a/c pump..

i think we are all so looking in to electric motor replacments for whinches that would draw around 60 amp. permanent magnet motors. still testing/designing them.

the price i quoted was purchasing an off the shelf thomson 12 volt electric motor.

Perhaps if we had enough people interested we could do a bulk buy of a/c pumps (i should be able to source them) and motors and build them? i still think i gonna go the belt drive off the cars engine though.

i'm making enquiries about the hydraulic alternative...... and apparently it can be done and not too expensively....... i'm yet to find a price though

sounds like a good plan, i was thinking about buying a cheap compressor from bunnings just to get the air tank, pressure switch etc, i was wondering if i could also utilise the actual compressor unit off it too, the hydraulic option sounds good, i think an electric motor would drag the arse out of the batteries too quick driving something like that

you could do that quite successfully but you shouldn't have a hydraulic motor inside the cab of your vehicle. if a hose/fitting bursts you get extremely hot hydraulic oil go everywhere. probably suitable for a trayback/ute though.

$70-80 petrol compressors for sale at Bunnings. From memory had a 20lt tank. Only drawback would be the room it would take up. Unsure of it's CFM but would be more than adequate for tyre inflations and rattle guns.

Matt i'm trying to source one thats small enough to couple directly to the drive pully so you can still utilise the electric clutch..... with a small 4cylinder aircon compressor, it should fit under the bonnet of most vehicles...... well, thats what i'm hoping for.

i think Mark is thinking of removing the electric motor and raping it for parts :) Actually..... you could hook a hydraulic motor to that and have quick connect hydraulic fittings on it so you can lift it out of the back and hook it up under the bonnet :) Lots of possibilities...... but you need the cashola to develope it.

i think Mark is thinking of removing the electric motor and raping it for parts :) Actually..... you could hook a hydraulic motor to that and have quick connect hydraulic fittings on it so you can lift it out of the back and hook it up under the bonnet :) Lots of possibilities...... but you need the cashola to develope it.
thats exactly what i was thinkin, ive got heaps of space under my tray
