hi i was just watching the new 4wd action dvd and seen the part on diff breathers and now i have a few questions. i have serched on forums but no one has asked these questions( maybe im just really dumb and everyone else knows i dunno)

i was looking and noticed that my front diff has a pipe coming out of it about half way between the diff housing and the passanger tire is this a diff breather?? the one on the dvd came from the top of the diff housing
and i looked at the rear and couldnt find any hose coming from it at all is there ment to be a stock diff breather or not??

also on the dvd the bloke screws a bent pipe piece with threaded end into the top of the diff housing how do i make that hole for it to screw into is there ment to be one in there already or do i have to drill one in there or something like that

sorry if im being a pain in the ass just im new to this and wouldnt mind learning all the bits and pieces to make my truck better in the water

thanks for your time and anyones help

G'day mate.

I've fitted breathers to my 60 and it is a really straightforward job, took about 15 minutes once i got around to doing it...
Yep, that hose out of the front diff is a breather. I took mine off at the housing. There is a barb there, the hose should be held on with a hose clamp. Stick the new hose on there and attach it with a new hose clamp.
Use hose clamps to attach the breather to the barb! Don't use zip ties like they did in the dvd, they will leak and come off. I used 3 clamps on each breather before i was happy with the seal.
For the rear diff, mine did have a barb already fitted with a short length of hose (like the front). The barb should be on the top of the housing a few inches to the drivers side of the diff pumpkin.

A point to note is that even with breathers, if you get stuck in a boghole or crossing with the wheels spinning and driveshaft turning, you can still get water and mud in the diff (trust me), however it shouldn't happen very often!

Any more questions, just give me a yell.

Cheers.

When you get your breathers set up, don't forget to check them regularly. 4WDs are very good at throwing up rocks and tree branches and I have seen breather hoses ripped off by them. If you can stop and have a look before driving into a river then so much the better.

Another thing to attend to is the transmission and transfer case. They should also have breathers and can take in water.

It is not a bad idea to check all your oils for water as part of routine maintenance and checking after each trip. As Lugh said, you can get water in them even with high breathers. It is rare but still possible.

I dont think the tutorial on the DVD was all that great.

He mentions you need to leave enough slack in the hose for the diff to flex, but to me on the DVD it looks like he left hardly any?? I left much more than that.

Also, i used a plastic T-piece to connect the front and rear breathers, then you only have 1 hose and 1 fuel filter in the engine bay.

And, as was already mentioned, dont use cable ties to attatch to breather nipple, use hose clamps.

On the 60, the breather for the rear comes out right next to the brake line bracket, so i just followed that. On the front, the original short breather was held by a little bracket on the chassis, so i just copied the amount of slack there. Has worked fine so far. I did choose to run two sperate lines for two reasons:
1- More airflow for each breather (not sure if it's really necessary though)
2- Because the breathers were on opposite sides of the vehicle, and i was feeling too lazy to try to run one of them across the transmission tunnel.

Cheers.

I have also done this. I ran seperate breathers with fuel filters on the ends up into the engine bay. The gearbox breathes where the shifter is, so that can't be done. The transfer case has a (supposed) on way valve. When had some work done to it I got the mechanics to drill out the valve and tap a thread for a barb. This breather has also been run into the engine bay.
