Hi,

I recently renewed my greenslip to find that it was $750. (I am under 25) I thought this was very high so I went on the http://www.maa.nsw.gov.au/default.aspx?MenuID=102 (http://www.maa.nsw.gov.au/) website (This compares greenslips from all insurers that offer them in NSW) and it quoted me for every insurer at $614. So why was I getting charged $750? I work for an insurance company and I soon found out that on each car's rego papers there is a shape code. Some vehicle shapes are charged more than others. The shape code for a 1990 4Runner is 'PVS' which is the code for a panel van. Panel vans are subject to an extra $130 premium as they are classified as a good and services vehicle. Clearly a 4Runner isn't a panel van so I decided to call the RTA and find out what is going on.

I called the RTA and they investigated it by digging up the orginal papers for the car. The papers were blank so some idiot from the RTA has just guessed what a 4Runner is and decided to put the code in as PVS. So this means every since the 1990 4Runner has been in Australia they have been charging the extra $130 for the vehicle!

There are 2 ways insurance companies classifiy what kind of vehicle is being insured. Most of them go by the RTA codes (which will classify a 4Runner as a PVS shape) and others have their own pricing sheet which they have done themselves. You might find that for the 1990 4Runner some might charge around $130 less than others for a greenslip. This is becuase the ones that have put together all the codes themselves have classified a 1990 4Runner as a normal wagon and therefore don't charge the extra premium. The insurance companies that use the RTA codes (which tehnically they all should be) price higher.

So there are 2 ways you can avoid paying the extra $130. The first way is to choose an insurance company that doesn't use the RTA codes (however, more and more companies are starting ot use the RTA codes so I'm not sure how much longer they will not use the PVS code) The other way is to go to a blue slip inspection station and they will change the code for you to what it should be for $31. This change will then apply for every year that you renew your greenslip and you will not have to do it again and that way you can also choose any insurer.

I'm just curious - 4Runner owners (except 1990) or Landcruiser owners (except utes) - what code do you have on your papers? I'm not sure if the incorrect code applies to any other 4Runner or Landcruisers year models. (Hiluxs are utes so the extra charge will always apply to them as utes are classified as a goods and services vehicle)
