Had a peek under the bonnet of a brand new diesel hilux this morning. What is the model number of this motor, eg 3L, 1KZTE etc?

Basic layout looks the same as my 89 4runner with the 2.8, most things are in the same spot, although on the new engine the oil filter has been put on the other side and flipped vertically! Sits a lot higher up too so easier to get to.

I noticed that the "timing belt" on the new motor doesn't run off the crank, just camshaft and fuel pump, so I guess the crank and cams are connected by gears internally? Gone are the days of a snapped belt destroying your motor then?

Also, the fuel pump's not connected to the crank so the timing for fuel delivery is done electronically?

One thing I couldn't work out is the power steering setup. The pump or what I thought was the pump doesn't run off the single belt that runs everything else (water pump, alternator) so can't work that one out.

It is called a 1KD-FTV and more or less a direct injected fancy version of the multipoin injected 1KZ-TE with about 35kw more to boot.

Hav a read here for a little info on wat its got.
