Strange Whistle from 4Runner

Hi guys, I have a 95 4Runner V6, and for the last couple of months I have noticed a strange whistling, it sounds like its coming from under the car, it is almost like a high pitched whistle and right before it shifts up the noise gets really bad and once it does the noise cuts out a little until the next shift up.

I've asked around and no one seems to know anything, it really starting to drive me nuts :crazy: , hopefully someone has encountered this problem before and can tell me what the hell it is.

Auto? Sounds like a tranny related issue.

Maybe someone snuck under it one night and turboed it for you!!! lol.
I agree with pigdog that it may be tranny related, maybe try an oil change then see how it goes.

LOL... I wish someone turbo'd my car, I've changed the transmision fliud that seemed to make the noise even louder...

Yeah sounds like tranny mate. Your gearbox could be buggered but best bet is to take it to a good mechanic that you trust and get him to diagnose the problem for you. Good luck.

Hey mate did ya find out what that noise was? I've got a 80 series cruiser
doing the same thing. Would be nice to know whats going on.

my cruiser used to have a load whistle.. but it came from the exhaust, once i put on a decent exhaust it went away, my mates 4 runner was the same...

i got a hilux that does the same thing, but it came from the ehaust. New muffler and sloved the problem!

V6 4 Runners are well known for a whistle in the exhaust when the muffler baffles rust and move inside,change your muffler or upgrade your whole exhast system.It makes this sound at higher revs,when exhaust flow is high,which is why you hear it just before it upshifts.

I would hate to replace a transmission, just find out it wasnt, when you can replace a muffler for 100 dollars.
