View Full Version : 75 series engine options?

Gday All,

I have recently bought a 1985 75 series tray back, with 3F petrol engine.

Whilst I find the performance of the 3F just bearable (its not too bad except for overtaking/highway cruising), the real problem is the fuel consumption - my first long trip used a full tank in approx. 360KM, which is at least $100 worth of fuel...

Now, from what I have read, there are reliability issues running gas on these engines, is that correct or are there solutions to this?

What about converting to the EFI 3F - worth bothering with?

Aside from the 3F, I'm also open to this idea of an engine swap - however I currently lack the space and experience to perform the work myself. With that in mind, is there anything out there possible within a budget of say, $5-6K?

A bit more power would be nice, but much more so better economy...

How about a 1FZ-FE, or am I dreaming given my budget?
Diesel perhaps?

Thanks in advance for any helpful replies, cheers

the first thing to think about with your budget if you want to drop another engine in is freight, if you drop it in or a workshop does then you will probably be paying a bit more then a motor going from brissie to brissie.

the ifz-fe is a good thing and IMO and could be achieved in your budget even if a workshop was to do the fit. they aren't that good on fuel but they go pretty good and are pretty reliable.

the 1HZ :waycool: (4.2L deisel), IMO wouldn't fit in that budget, (fuel tank swaps???, engine mounts???, cost of the motor complete((with good injector pump etc etc))someone compitent to fit it.... etc etc.)

now if you want to go 4.2d or even 4.5p then maybe the cheaper option would be to sell the 3f ute and buy a 4.2 or 4.5 ute.... could work at alright....

just a little bit of thought for you

There is nothing that will save you money. All the swaps are going to be $6000 upwards ,probably a lot more if you want to be sure the new engine is good.
I put a 1HZ into my 73 series and while the fuel consumption went from 18/100 with the 3F down to 12.5/100 with the 1HZ,it will take a couple of decades to pay for itself.
Diesel prices are getting higher so its no longer the answer

Most engine from petrol to diesel swaps will require another gearbox(unless you use a 2H slug or an incresingly hard to find 12HT)

The LPG option is the best. They do present the odd headache but with the govt subsidy there is nothing cheaper

gas is a good option but if you do make sure you buy a good quality kit and have a good quality installer.
