G'day all.
I'm after some info from you 60 series Guru's (I know you're out there) about replacing the early 4-speed gearbox with one out of a later model 5-speed.

What's involved?

Is it a bolt in job?
Does it need a shorter tailshaft and different mounts?
Is it a full custom fabrication job?

Any info would be great.
Thanks.

ill be doing the same swap in my 40 series soon and theyre the same gearbox, iv been told theyll bolt straight in so long as your input shaft if the same, so if youve got a HJ60, get a 5 speed from a HJ60 rather then a FJ60. other then that you will have to get your jack shaft lengthed and your tail shaft shortend as the box is about 6 inches longer, iv been told 88mm but not positive.

good luck on your swap, would be interested to hear how it goes.

Might be worth giving Marks Adaptors a call, they may have something for this conversion.

I,ve just finished doing just this. The gearbox swap was easy enough, I had a five speed from a 85 FJ60 going into my 81 HJ60. The input shafts were the same length and bolted straight up to the bell housing and rear mounts. The rear tail shaft is shorter so you need the one from the five speed. The other problem I encountered was that where the tail shafts bolt to the diffs the holes didn't line up. I was lucky enough that I also got the diffs from the other car as well. So I just changed the diffs as well. Dependant on the Transfer case you have to do some wiring and plum in the vacum lines as well.
Hope this helps but if you need more help give me a yell.

Thanks guys! Some good info there.

So which transfer cases DON'T need mucking around with wires and vacuum lines? The simpler the better i say.

I have a multifit pinion flange on my rear diff from where it got rebuilt (the first time), so it should fit.
Do you need to replace the front tailshaft too? I'm assuming it's the same length, but is the bolt pattern to the front output shaft on the transfer the same, or do i need to get a 5 speed front shaft and another multifit pinion flange for the front diff?

Thanks guys.
Dylan.

If you can find a transfer case with mechanical 2wd to 4wd then half your luck!
I found that the front tail shaft was the same length so didn't need to be changed. As I had the diffs there I just changed them out but part of the problem as well was the tailshaft from my four speed didn't line up with the transfer case either. You should be able to rip the mount off your old one to bolt up to the new or as you said just change the pinion flange.
