Hydraulic lifters (or should I say cam followers??) in those aren't they? That'll give yoy an RPM related ticking noise if you've got a stuffed one...

Do a search on "1HD-T tick" and you should find several threads already on the subject, particularly "Sea Dogs" ongoing quest to fix his.
Bottom line = it's not lifters or valve related, and it's not detremental to the engines life.

Yeah iv had one in my 97 80 series for the last 100'000k's now and no worries yet and iv had it turboed and given it a hidding here and there.
funny you mention ticking, my brothers 1hdt did tick once or twice, and only 1 week later the engine has had to come out, which we are rebuilding as we speak... dont mean to scare, just my case.
btw, just for a laugh, his wife has just checked the water level in their ford laser, thinking it needed more she tops it up, drove off and the cars stops 50mt down the road
she actually had filled the "engine" with water.

Nice to know I am thought about. :)
After changing out the big end bearings recently I am heaps happier with my 1HDT... there is a ticking noise there but it is a diesel so what can you expect.. the ticking / slapping noise that I was concerned about is gone.. The clutch has a few noises that I hear at various stages through the rev range but all in all it is going well for a car with over 300k on the clock..
I have had the fuel pump recond.. injectors recond...3 times..had the valves clearances checked twice and when I pulled the sump off to change the big ends I checked the end float and ovality and bearing clearances of the crank... to add to this I checked the end float and bearing clearances of the camshaft, again all good...
Everything comes back saying engine is spot on!
