hey there people my m8 was driving to work the other morning and all of a sudden the oil light flashed on for half a second then went off no longer then 5 secinds later it just stoped runnig he tryed to restart it and nothing not even turning over!!!! so i got outta bed towed it back to mine. bout 9 hours later i got a socket on the crank bolt to try and turn it (wouldent move). next day i got the keys stuck it in the hole turned it to acc so the glow plugs can do there thing! glow light on !! glow light off!! turn key and it cranked (scratching my head ) so i tryed it again to make sure i wasnt hearing things and it cranked. so i left it and called him up he came round
key in glow on glow off turn key and it stated !!!!!!!!!

the oil was low so we were thinking that maybe they have an safety thing like if the oil is low the engine stops is this likely or can some one think off somthing else:mad::cry::waycool: <------emotions from mate that owns the car

I have heard of cars having the shut off thing but would have thought that to be too advanced for the old 2.8D.

When you tried to turn the crank did you have it out of gear? I have fallen for that one before after stuffing a timing belt, turn out it wasn't seized  just in gear:waycool:

These engines were known for having problems with main bearings, often resulting in broken crankshafts. He may have had a bearing spin & seize that then freed up after the engine cooled down. The only way to check is to strip the bottom end down & inspect it.:(
