So tonight I'm driving home in the 75 series troopy, realised the front tank was near empty, so switched to the rear. Car starts coughing, looked down to see the front tank was now empty, despite the indicator light showing the rear tank is being used. The rear guage hadn't moved.

Basically, it appears that despite me changing to the rear tank, it still kept using the front tank until empty. Any ideas of the problem, and cost to fix?

PS - can build a PC blind-folded, obviously not so good with mechanics :)

Sounds like a similar problem I had with my 80. There are 2 solenoid valves that switch the main fuel line and return/breather line.
A bit of algae sludge glogs up the valves and they stick. Find the valves and disconnect the hoses and blow out with compressed air while switching them. Blow a bit of air back into the tank in case the hoses are blocked.
Be prepared to have fuel running into your armpits..... it's tops.
I know on the 80 that it was almost impossible to get the valves out and I think it was about $500 from toyota for a pair of new ones.

I've also been told that there is a strainer inside the tanks that can gunk up, but I think you have to drop and drain the tank to get at it.

hey you could use a Pollack valve (they are a 6 port 12v unit) to replace the factory unit if its stuffed they are only $100 and work great with diesel. Check it out before folkin out:thumb:
Cheers Nick.
