Guys
I have a whining noise from rear axle on my 80 series GXL. It started after a recent trip up north. It is not there all the time.
It appears to be worse between 60 - 80 km/h. Above 80 I guess the noise from the MTRs drown the axle nose.
Oil is 6 month old and looks good.
No diff oil leaks.
The cruiser has done 225k km.

Any suggestions on where to start looking?

Uni joints and wheel bearing are a good place to start. It is hard to tell exactly where these noises come from and these are common failures in the rear.

Most likely the pinion bearing, if you are sure it's coming from the diff.

Thanks for the replies.
Looks like HDJ105 is spot on.
I had a diff place taking it for a test drive and that's what he said too. They are taking it apart and fixing it at the moment.
What a good exuse to put a an Airlocker, in when the diff is all ready apart.... event the wife bought it... :)
