G'day everyone, My mechanic tells me I need a new clutch in the GQ and has quoted me $960 fitted, i understand it is a heavy duty one. Can anyone tell me if this is fair value, it seems ok to me given he needs the truck for 2 days.
Thanks
Parts $300-400 +
Labour $400 ish
Price sounds good to me.

i got mine fitted heavy duty for $725
Book time for the job is 7.5 hours + parts, i reckon it's more than fair!

Book time for the job is 7.5 hours + parts, i reckon it's more than fair! That would be for standard rigs too, not modified ones that may have other things which need to be r&r.

if the clutch is a good heavy duty one then the price is fair ..but there is good and better clutches......
ask for the clutch price on its own, youd expect to be paying about $450 for the clutch alone ( say an extreme) .....and if so $400 is a bargain for the install......So me being sceptical id be guessing the clutch is a " standard " heavy Duty " one worth about $300 and you paying 650 for labour and thats about average $80 hour...premium labour rates...
We used ( and one of my friends still does) charge about 450 for a fit including new spiggit and a flywheel machine.....price of the clutch was up to you ..or supply your own

Don't forget the mechanic is probably going to change your gearbox fluids in that quote too. (he technically doesn't have to though.. check with him)
Also the flywheel needs to be machined to flatten it out.
All these bits add up.

Thanks guys, he has told me a good quality heavy duty clutch (i can not remeber the brand but he did tell me) as he is aware I tow a camper. He also said he would be machining the flywheel etc. From the comments above it seems like a good quote.
Much appreciated. Cheers

if your dubious in anyway still, just confirm the brand clutch hes intending to use and then indpendantly price it up then you can work out IF hes overcharging you
But not all mechanics are assholes these days there are still a few honest ones of us left!!

True that alot of people shoul question prices when it comes to repairs, there have been a few bad eggs claiming to be good mech over the years that make it hard for the rest of us. if he is up front and honest about the clutch replacement the trust hime its the ones who hide the prices that worrie me. good price but i have a gq ute disl 4.2 that needs a cluch and after the last one i did at work im more than happy to pay someone else to do it for me ha ha, hevey gear box but bugger me id put that bastard under a mack truck if i had the chance. bty, pbr made a hevey duty clutch kit that was absolute garbage so be carefull of that mate

andy, thanks for your tips with the crappy clutch kits I will keep that in mind. I understand that the majority of mechanics are genuine and they are being honest with you and they do not want you to break down when on a trip with the family. I do not have any method of checking the price of major work so given the information i have managed to get since I joined 4wd monthly I thought this would be the best place to confirm in my mind this mechanic is a good genuine bloke, and it appears as though he is. Being in finance I do not the first clue what a good price is.

I got a Extreme Outback with the 1150kg pressure plate but with the normal clutch plate.
It is a stomper! it is still heavy even with the vaccum assist!
Got it for a great price as one of the bloes who sponsors my rig is in good with a parts supplier, got it for $400.
Put it in with the help of the missus and the bro-in-law, piece of pi$$ to do, dont know what everyone whinges about?
