i am just based in dubai and thinking about bringing my TJ (06) across as a personal import. has anyone attempted a conversion on one of these at all? because it is locally available i cannot see any real drama's aprt from the obvious which i should be able to locate in oz

ok,maybe i should have refrased that. i am an aussie living in dubai and trying to determine if its viable to bring it back and change across. apart from steering boxes, dash, pedals (its an auto, blame the missus), brakes etc it seems fairly straight forward as most can be grabbed by aust spec units. i am also a mechanic by trade which is why am looking this route,

cheers for help

hasslesnt...you may have all the mechanicals sorted...but have you considered the issue of compliance and rego in australia....be worth getting in touch with an engineer out here first to check up on that before going any further....

thanks Cac,

from what i can gather from qld transport you just need an "approved person" re engineer to approve the modifications. if using aust parts and the chassis seem to be the same re steering mounts pre drilled etc which they seem to be . it should not be to much structurally. the compliance is similiar but just the usual yank things like the indicators and front lights. i feel like i should just get a front cut of an wrecked tj and do a transfer. if you dont think its worth while i just won't bother with it

If it has any real vaue in Dubai it may be better value to sell it there and buy a replacement here. TJs are getting pretty cheap........

Only real difference suspension wise is front Panhard mount is on wrong side.

hasslesnt...as blu-125 has said...it depends on the value of the truck, and also the mods you have done to it...if its stock standard, i wouldn't bother...i'd just sell it in dubai, and buy a replacement out here....

if its modified, and you're moving to qld, then i'd probably still sell it....qld is one of the stricter states when it comes to vehicle mods, you'd want to be pretty certain you can get it approved...how long have you owned the vehicle for?? i recall there being something about having to own the vehicle for at least 12mths whilst in another country before being able to bring it back here as a private import....

i'd be emailing qld transport with the details of the vehicle including any modifications and getting a definite answer from them before doing anything....and make sure you have your paperwork in order too....

thanks Cac and Blu, sorry for the delay have been in kuwait for a few days. thats exactly what i was looking for, a straight answer. the only reason i was contemplating it was because they are pretty cheap across here and it seemed viable because of the simplicity of the conversion. i will just flog it before we leave and grab another. you really cannot beat them in the sand across here, cheers again
