Excuse my ignorance on diffs but the noise from the rear diff on my 89 Hilux seems to be getting worse. Just rolling along it is fine but any sort of drive from the motor and I get this whining noise.
It's done over 300,000km with 32" tyres so I guessing it's just coming to the end of it's life.
Do diffs just die or do they have specific problems that you can fix?
What are my options here, can I get it rebuilt or do I just put one in from a second hand dealer?
Just trying to get an idea on what to do so any iput appreciated.
Cheers,
Bigfella
Mate it could be as simple as worn bearings or uni joints. I would get it looked at before it breaks causing a more expensive fix.

Could be a simple as crownwheel and pinion teath not meshing right. Get it looked at and you may be able to save the one you have for less cost then replacing yours. If a diff shop says it needs a new crown wheel and pinion try these guys for price on the parts.
Locktup 4x4 International - Catalog (http://www.locktup4x4.com.au/catalog/a08e28ac-2210-4e29-8ec7-564c27694a24.aspx) If they don't have it listed chances are they'll be able to get it.

Has it ever been damaged by ingesting water and not been realised?

Not sure Mike, only had it less than 12 months although both diffs have breathers.
Can anyone recomend a diff expert in outer S.E. Melbourne (Pakenham) area? or do I just take it to the local mechanic?
