View Full Version : Single cab Hilux stereo
Texas

Hi all,
I have a 90 model single cab hilux and want to put a decent stereo in it. Currently just have a sony cd player and 6 1/2" in the doors. Any ideas if 6x9's are hard to fit in the doors and also possibly mount an amp and a sub or bass tube.
Any help much appreciated

gday texas, i got a 99 single cab lux, dunno about 6x9's but i got a 12 inch sub and a 1350W amp in mine, the sub is on the drivers side, its a 12inch pioneer slimline sub. and the amp is on the passengers side. fits fine, the box realy to perform at its best needs to be bigger, but im happy with it, and its as big as my space will allow.

if you want good sound quality in a single cab ute all you need is a good set of 6'' components and a good 8'' or 10'' sub runing of a 4ch amp. A 12'' is getting to big and they dont sound as good, they tend to rumble more where an 8 or 10'' is crisper and punchier.
There are a milion different ways to set it up but thats the best ive found, but im very picky when it comes to sound systems

im glad i found this thread!, ive been wanting to get some subs or a sub in my cruizer but dunno how they'd fit since my amp is mounted smack bang in the middle of the back of the cab
did you have to readjust the seat forward more to have that sub there ?
cheers.

ill get some pictures of my setup tomorrow, the sub is behind the drivers seat, i folded some bracket up and screwed to the firewalll, and made sure the sub goes no where, i cant turn the volume past 24 with the windows up cos you WILL go deaf......my head unit goes up to 42, but i need better quiality speakers, they distort at about 34

shop around for your sub box as there are some smaller ones around these days, The one i have accomodates a 10" sub and fits the space behind the seat nicely. Also make sure you mount your amp up high as possible dont want it to die during a water crossing.

yeah i never thought id fit a sub in mine so i just stuck the amp right in the middle,so its probably in the way now for a sub if i put one in,might have to move it under the seat..

If that was my single cab, my knees would be hitting the dash!
If you want to put huge stuff behind the seat, then I suggest that it's on the passenger side, as girl passengers like to slide up close to the dash board in all cars, (F-Knows why) and you wouldn't want to risk needing a girl to drive YOUR Lux because you no longer fit in the driver's seat! :)

i think you'd be really pushing shit up hill to get 6x9's in the door of a hilux. My 6.5" splits were a good fit in my 02 hilux and if you run them off an amp, will be an ample front stage if you don't buy crap. Highly recommend a set of focal splits, they'll rock your world. Must be run off an amp though.
Cheers

problem with the passenger side, is that that jack in in the way, then you have to get in there with a grinder and cut out the jack mounts

Not sure about the hilux specifically(?) but in my Patrol to fit 6x9's meant cutting into the door so I went down the 6.5" splits and a 8" Bazooka tube behind the passenger seat. I originally had the amp under the passenger seat but after destroying 2 in separate water crossings (guess who didn't learn the first time) I had a custom built roof console made to house the amp at roof level, if I drown it now I am in DEEP trouble.

Check Ebay for the Pioneer shallow mount subs i think they were around $230 last time i checked. Havent heard them myself would love to know how they go from anyone, am currently in the middle of setting up my 75 trayback. So far have 7 x 10s in door, kicker splits and a JVC 4 channel with a Kenwood 500w rms mono block waiting to power my choice of subs. Probably go 2 Pioneer 10'' shallow mounts in a custom box. Some excellent ideas have been posted on here, thanks fellas.

i put my sub in today, let me say..it sounds mediocre, i think i need to buy a new headset with 2 RCA outputs( only got 1 ATM which is running the amp) and so ive had to run RCA splits,i read using the splits you cant control the sound quality of the sub etc. or something along the lines of that
anyways heres some pics. also the passenger seat only had to move forward not even 2 inches which you can still sit in comfortably and the seat still sits back pretty good.

yeah mate, just spray painted them with acrylic gloss i had, just have to do really really light coats on it ,i did about 6 coats on everything ,ive tried doing the cab in carpet before and it was such a prick to do,i took it back out and put the old vinyl shit in,easier to clean too.

yeah it was one of the moulded ones from tru fit carperts and it was #$*&, i cracked the shits with it so hard ! lol, wouldnt follow the contours of the body at all, and you have to cut all the holes out ,even tracing it with the old vinyl mat, nothin aligned up cause the actual carpet bit was bigger then the original cruizer one, also it was bout 30mm short all along the left side haha but perfectly snugged on the right , beat me..god knows how they do it in cars so perfectly..but yeah gettin it muddy and sandy n shit all the time so i put le vinyl back in.
