Hey guys, i'm a shop fitter by trade so i require my ute quite often at work now, but recently work is just so full on i've been going to and from sites with a fully loaded ute...
So i thought the other day, would it be worth it selling my duel cab lux for a single cab tray lux or something like that? I love my ute but i also need more room in the back, buying a trayback for the duel cab will give me a bit more room but not as much as i think i need...
what are your thoughts??

If you don't use the rear seats often then a single cab ute sounds like a better option. I often have a full load of people so I went with a dual cab. Have you thought about a removable carry rack system on the back of the dual cab?

I don't use the back too often, i bought the ute because it was local and at the time i thought a 5 seater would be ideal, ive been quoted $250 - $500 for a steel tray for the back, and i have a list of mods i want to do and i only have about $1000 left to pay off the loan so i figure sell / trade for a single cab with most of the extra's i would like to put on mine
On another note, are both single and duel cab's equally capable off road, once i finish paying the ute off i will have plenty of dosh to rig it up and make the most of my weekends :D

Is the gear that you carry all that heavy? If it takes up room but isn't too weighty, you could fairly easily get an oversize (or at least maximum legal size) tray made up for the back of the Dual Cab, and get it fitted with plug in legs or similar, so that during the working week it can be a full size tray back with a double cab up front; and come weekends or play time the legs on the tray go into their slots, wind down to the ground, 4 stay bolts get undone, vehicle drives out from under and then reverses in under the camper tray already set up to go - takes about 15 mins and the camper tray can be built onto the existing ute tub with just a few mods to make the tub a quick change-over jobbie.
A mate here in Sth Aus has done just that with his dual cab Hilux. During the week it runs a looong tray (lots of overhang and shite departure angle!) with all sorts of gear built onto it (he's into mini 'self sustaining' solar powered bio-diesel plants) and come play time he has a long ute tub (ex the lwb Xtra cab) modded to fit and become quick fit/release that has the camper cab built onto it! That usually sits up on its stilts in the back yard and he uses it as an overflow bedroom when he needs to, but come play time, he's off in the less than 1/2 an hour it takes to do the change-over.
You could do worse than consider summat like that?! Modding the ute tub wasn't that expensive, and most of the Camper gear stuff he 'custom built' himself; the most expensive bit was buying the custom tray cos it was longer than usual and they had to support the weight right out at the end. No extra GVM load tho, no rego changes or anything needed, that's all still std, and no spring or suspension changes either. It's still the same old dual Cab Ute that he's had set up the way he likes it, and he owns it outright, so ins etc is cheaper too, even with the two rear sections. Surely you'd be better off keeping the vehicle that you virtually own and know rather than buying a newbie and entering into a new round of debt right now, what with interest rates etc. Over to you!
Cheers!
