Your best bet mate is to get it round to a head shop for an analysis. It can be dye-penetrant tested and X-rayed. It could be re-welded and re-sleeved but you have to ask yourself the cost due to getting a good one from the wreckers and having it tested. Cost factoring so to speak. Looking at the pics I would be looking at obtaining ahead from the wreckers. At least from the wreckers if it is no good you take it back and they exchange it. Private sale,,,,,,,YOUR STUCK WITH IT.

Er, isnt that a pic of the block, not the head?

If its the block you`re talking about its very close to a trip to the scrappies.

The support for the fire ring on the gasket is all but eaten away due to prolonged cooling water ingress or excessive combustion heat, and it would be very difficult to repair properly. You may get away with machining the block for a flanged dry liner but you would have to remove a lot of the parent material to do so.

I`d look for another block.

I'd have to agree with dakar.

Should be plenty of these blocks around.

Where the damage is at the rounded corner, is not a problem, as the piston rings don't actually go there. The bore damage is a problem. This engine will still run, but not have the best performance. If you want to keep the vehicle, I suggest a re-bore, hone and over-sized rings. If you plan to sell it, then just put it back together with a good head and it will run fine, for a while.

Sorry mate, I dont agree.

I you look closely at the pic you`ll see were the eroded/coroded part has eaten across the surface that supports the rolled steel section or fire ring of the head gasket. Without support combustion gases will blow out into the gasket itself and stuff it in no time.

A rebore wont fix it I`m afraid...

I can't disagree, but I think you could get away with selling to a dealer.

I doubt it would last long enough to get to a dealership without towing it.

Just a thought - could it be welded and remachined?
