Can You Go Bigger Than 33's ......without Changing Diff Ratio's?

Currently Running 4.3 Diff Ratio's

Running 285/75/16 Bridestone Muds.......it's Pulling Them Along No Worries.........

Can I Run 34's-35's? Just On 4wd Trips?..........

Or Do I Need To Go 4.5's Or 4.8' Ratios?

Id be changing to a 4.56 to run a 33" tyre let alone a 35". U will hav far less crawl speed and u will hav to ride the hell out of ur clutch. I ran 33" with 4.3's and the same motor as urs and I noticed way better drivability when I changed to 4.56. Fixes ur speedo to a degree also.

U cud always fit sum reduction gears to the Tcase to compensate for the big tyres.

if your just mudding it, I reckon it'll be alright. if you need to climb up or down steep hills, you'll have the same problem as me.....no engine braking in first gear, or not enough anyway.

if you want it to work right, you gotta spend the $$$$$$$$, the same thing thats holding me back. LOL

U arent really spending all that much money as u can buy the different ratio centres and then sell urs and maybe even make a profit.

4.88's r generally dearer as ther is higher demand but u shud be able to get a 4.56 from a surf for around the $200 mark, they r an open centre so arent as dear as the LSD 4.3's/4.88's but that is not a problem if u fit a locker.

Then u hav to add cost to install the new gearsets and hav the carrier, pinion bearings replaced and pinion seals while its all in bits. To hav someone rebuild both diffs wud cost u around the $600 mark. So thats $1300 to hav fully rebuilt 4.88's in ur truck, Or u cud source second hand ones and assuming u changed the diffs urself u cud probably get away with front and rear installed for around $500. Assuming that the brandnew gearsets r just standard units and not cryo dipped or strengthened I wud go with the second hand centres.

A set of decent 35's wud cost u sumwer around another $1300 so yes it does add up, But if u really want sumthin ull find a way to save. just sumthin to think about. Cheers

to get both my diffs rebuilt and new swivel hub seals wheel bearing new rear pinion bearing and lsd pack im looking at close to 2k cant tell u the final figure as i still havnt got my bill its been close to 6mths maybe more :P

mick another option you have if your not worried about on road is getting crawler gears maybe even duals if you want to go that route. im looking at putting the 4.88's in my lux when i get the 35-36's.

oh and i will be putting crawler gears in maybe duals. i do have a spare transfercase so i could do this then swap it straight over in a day

4.88's came out of 22R (2.4P) hiluxes. pretty sure surfs are either 4.3 or 4.56. Ther is a 8" centre from the hiace in a 5.2 ratio but they r considerably weaker apparently. My rebuild prices wer based on that u took the extracted diff centre alone to the rebuilder and then refitted urself. IMO fiddling with the toyota LSD is a waste of time and spending the extra to hav a locker fitted is far more benefical, remeber even the best LSD's r only about 60% efficient wher as a locker is 100%.

yeh mate i agree that a locker is far better then an lsd but i couldnt really afford to buy an airlocker to put in the rear. and after a new clutch pack going in im very happy with how the lsd works, tho definatly no subsitute for a air locker.

If you want to save money I say set them up yourself. You can find step by step instructions online on how to do it. Its not to bad of a job. But it will take you a while to rebuild them if its your first time.

As far as gears go I have been running 4:88's with 33", 35", 38" and now 40" tires. The diff is under geared but it is a trail rig only and I make up for the gearing in my t-case. With the size tire I'm running now 5:29's make me nervous. I have broken 5:29's but I have never broken a set of untreated 4:88's.

Silly question mate but have you measured your current tyres? I think from memory that 285/75R16s are actually a tad taller than 33 inches by only a few mm's. If you go to 35's and use 4.56 in place of 4.3 diff ratio it should drive pretty much the same as it does now. If you go to 4.88 and run 35's it will rev slightly harder. If you're doing 3000rpm now it will do about 3200rpm.

yes a 285/75 is more or less a 33X11.5.
