Hi all,
I have a question in regards to a 98 hilux I got a few months ago. When 4wd is engaged there is a loud knocking sound underneath when I start to drive, either when wheels are on full lock, or when I hit some rough stuff. It is almost the exact same sound I heard froma work vehicle years ago (a mitsubishi triton...which i believe was also independant front suspension).
Is this a symptom of major problems, lack of greasing somewhere, or is it just another reason that people don't like independant front suspension?
Thanks in advance, any replies would be greatly appreciated,
Richo...
G'day Richo
Ive got a 98 ford courier with ifs, the only time that i ever get a knocking noise is in low range. the noise in mine comes from the clutch grabing (clutch shudder) but i dont think thats the problem you're talking about.
I also have a question on cluth shudder in the tech section.
Cheers

Thanks anyway...
It may be a CV as it makes the noise in full lock...but it also makes a fair bit of noise in the rough stuff whenpointed straight ahead.
It's getting looked at today anyway so hopefully I won't have to sell all my belongings to get it fixed.
Cheers,
Richard

Thanks for the interest... I haven't been over anything too full on since I got the ute back, but the front left hand bearings were replaced, and this seems to have got rid of the noise.
Thanks,
Richo
greasing of the bush in the lower arm if it has grease nipples will also help a common problem, unless it was the cv "clicking' which may also be the problem>?
On the subject of Hiluxs, does anyone know of a successful conversion of leaf to coil or airbags done to a live axle Hilux.
I know its been done, i'll just get some more info for you ;)
cheers

For the coil conversion, see www.4lux.net (http://www.4lux.net)
Jon did his & has a few write ups on it.
the 98 ifs hilux is known to have come out of the factory with crook front diffs (incorrect backlash setting) which resulted in teeth shearing off the crown wheel. this happened with mine, which developed the noise you are describing. i would suggest that you drain the oil from the front diff and look for metal particles. my brother in law has a 2001 model which also suffered from the same problem. ??? ??? ???

When doing this have a look at the drain plug sometimes they have a magnet in them to try to collect the particles. Or else put a magnet into the oil drain that you use, it will collect the particles too.
Good luck
