OK, a bit of a story! I am doing some contract engineering on a new CAC intercooler system design, which has a world patent. We have done a preliminary setup on a cummins QSX15 with amazing results, and now it is time to do a scaled version on a "current" engine. So a search was done to find a feasible engine with EURO4 complience, and the best donor was the NEW toyota V8. It will be the benchmark engine for quite a few years!!!
We have just purchased a new v8 ute and sent it off to the FORD/ACART test facility in geelong to do a ~0km test to ADR79/02 (EURO4) specs.
The results confirm just how good these engines are!! the figures show that it well exceeds current euro4 and is only ~10% over Euro5 spec. The vehicle is now zooming around Fords test track racking up 3000km ready for the next "run-in' stage testing. After that its put on a truck and sent to me in brissy to have a few more dyno and emission baselines then the fitment of the CAC system and the SCADA monitoring system. then a few more tests to fine tune it, and back on the truck and back to ACART to do the final tests. Which will include EURO4 adr79/02 lev2 . . and dyno testing at -5,25,40,55degC. I will keep you updated on the results!!

yep they really got it right this time.......
interested to follow the results.

I had the chance to race a new v8 toyota ute (up to the speed limit of course) and i must say it flogged the absolute hell out of me.
Was very impressed.

If performance is the key these things will be absolute weapons once tickled up!!! early dyno testing showed that they are ~20-30% under fuelled and by just winding up the fuel and fitting a good exhaust they absolutely fly, nearly 20% more power!!!!!! WOW. The turbo design is almost perfect - it has 9.2 - 10.5psi of boost from just over idle to redline, amazing driveability!! which is partly why they have such great ON-demand torque!

DGR01,
Very interested to hear how you go with the intercooler modifications. Will be waiting anxiously for the results. If this CAC intercooler modification demonstrates what you have aniticipated, will it be available to the public by the end of the year?? am keen to extract a few more ponies from the V8. Have just racked up 10,000km's in mine and am keen to unleash the potential!!!

Cheers

so these engines have a max boost of 10.5????? that doesent seem like very much... considering the performance.... do you think there will be much change in economy?? i very keen to see how this goes

The twin turbo ones are even better. Econemy is supposed to be pretty good too

Hey guys & Girls, the guys at Taipan have gotten 145Kw at the tread just by chipping and fitting their Vortex exhust. take it to a diesel tuner and up the fuel load, who knows what they could get.

What I'm most impressed with is that someone manufacturing aftermarket parts is actually doing some qualitative testing.

Can the manual gearbox, xfer, and rest of the driveline handle the extra power?

Big power and torque may mean gearbox go bye-byes...

They go great but lets see how they are going after 10 years of mud, dust and corogations. Not to mention very limited on space under the bonnet for all those nice things we bolt on (like duel batt/ showers etc) and who wants an auto?????

Re 10 years. Shit mate I won't be able to afford one for that long anyway!

Sounds cool Greg! Will be interested to here the results! As D1cko said, whats a CAC intercooler? not something to do with the Aircon cooling the charge air is it?

Gunna be great in a few years time when these donks start showing up at engine importers and wreckers. You could swap it into all sorts of stuff, like many have done with the Toyota V8 quad-cam 1uzfe.

Dual Batteries bolt straight in without any mods, just buy the cradle and secure the battery. Shower is fitted like any other car. I have air locker compressor, shower heat exchanger, dual batteries, ERPS rust prevention module, winch & Spot light wiring and haven't had to move any factory fittings. I am also considering diesel gas fumigation. HOW Much room do you want!!!

Ahh shit, I hate being corrected. Well... yes... UNLESS they were going to pull it into individual little pieces and see precisely what it is made of!

one of my own designs :)...oh hang on you were after a serious reply....

sounds good though...be interesting to see the development of this motor

considering everything has been strengthened my personal opinion is in ten years time they will hold up better than anything else out there at the moment.

bti of an update!!

the test vehicle has spent most of last weekend zooming around Fords test track racking up the required 3000km to get it ready for the next barrage of tests. We did ADR79/02 and US FTP75, then into the dyno chamber to do 3 runs at 20deg ambient, 3 @ 25deg and 3 @ 40deg ambient, to determine how muck the ECU de-rates under high temps. All i can say is WOW!!!! the figures show that there is only a 4kw loss in power between 20deg and 40deg. This sort of power is amazing!!! My nissan feels like a slug @ 30deg let alone 40!!

Economy is fantastic, although it is yet to have a tray fitted but it still retained ~low10L/100km. and the emmissions output is waaaaaaay below the EURO4 Targets.

As of 8am this morning it is being loaded onto a car carrier for the trip to QLD, where i get to fit the new CAC setup adn get ready for the next lot of test!!

The "tray" you refer to, is it an under body air defector of some sort to improve air flow under the vehicle to reduce drag?

Cheers

Tray would be where you put a load of cargo.

Its a ute, utes have trays.

Could be a baking tray as by the sound of it, this thing really burns

I am picking up three troopys the black fellas have killed up here over the weekend one has a burnt clutch one has water in the fuel and on a common rail this can really cause some dramas I have heard quotes of upwards of 10,000 to fix this problem and one has completly wiped out a front wheel.... running from the cops.

so they are having some issues to much power seems to be one causing the clutchs to fail but mostly it is driver abuse causing it.

:o Oh my. What a dumb ass I feel like now. LOL! I was REALLY barking up the wrong tree there wasnt I?

Cheers DAVE_STR for highlighting the bloody obvious to me which I seem to have somehow over looked all together.:D

10.5psi max boost? That does sound very low for it's power output. I'd have expected double that. Perhaps more to the point, imagine if it did have double that? The tuning potential for these will be awesome. Anyone know of tuners/reprogrammers for these yet?

in 2006 we test drove these around outer melb and up in the territory good drive line up to task ,few small issues though.

Theres one sitting down at Oriental 4wd Wreckers here in Adelaide- done 10,000kms.

You wont get much change from $15K.
