Hi all, First time in the forum and hoping for some advice from all the experts. Have a GUII 3.0TDI which has developed a whistling sound around 2500-3000 rpm. Suspect it's in the turbo, but really have no idea. Any advice?

maybe its just the turbo induction noise. as far as i know all turbos whistle to a point.

Thanks D1cko, but I thinks it is past the point of normal. It seems to be worse under load and running at temp. sounds like a ref awarding a penalty.

exhaust manifold warping and then producing a loud whistle was a pretty common problem in the GU2.if thats the case get yours machined flat again
(on the face that meets the head) and it should be ok.
have replaced some manifolds with a new one only to find that the same problem would happen, but by machining the original we found they wouldn't warp any further so problem was solved.

Also check around your EGR valve. It is common for the gaskets to leak at the valve.

EGR pipes can also warp so have a look at them too.

Split in rubber / silicon hose, cracked intercooler tank?

Forgot about tanks. It is rarely the tank but the crimping of the core to the tank. You will see some oily black mess if there is a hole.

Thanks All. There is a small amount of unexplained black crap on the top of the crimping, so I might start with investigating that a bit further first. Many thanks

Its probably worth chucking it on a dyno for 5 mins to see if you can narrow down where the noise is comming from.

Mate my jackaroo 2000se t/d auto just yesterday .started to whistle called into garage for info 'told it was a bearing going in turbo drove only a few klm lost a lot of power lokks like turbo sh'''''''''''''t its self quote so far 2.000 plus check your oil pressure light &guage my light only came on for 3sec a week ago dont know if that is wat caused the problem so my advice is to have your oil pressure pump looked at cheers Kegjack

Mine does the same thing but sound is most audible from snorkel inlet and is much lower in the rev range, around 1200rpm as the turbo starts to spool. I was told it's just induction noise. There is a seperate whistle from the turbo which is just audible inside the car with windows up. Is it posiible I have a fault somewhere or should I expect induction noise through the snorkel? it kind of warbles, for want of a better word, like a ref's whistle as mentioned before.

I drove a 200 TDI SE which did the same thing as you describe thank God it was a company vehicle. Got a new one in 2002 & just out of warranty it did the same bloody think, but thank God company car. The firm got sick of this happening to a number of their vehicles so they got rid of them & bought Prado's & Pajero's.....proble solved. You can't beat a realiable vehicle

Hi Guys,
I have a 2000 Patrol ZD30 which makes more of a high pitched vibration rather than a whistle particularly under load from about 1700rpm. I was told by a 4wd specialist that it is the alternator belt tensioner/pulley which they replaced but no difference was noted with the noise. They then told me that they are 95% sure that it is the Intercooler which I replaced only to find the problem still exists. I also replaced 3 of the 4 hoses but to no avail. They now tell me with relative assurity that the problem exists deep down probably in the exhaust manifold and that I am likely to be up for atleast another $500 on top of the diagnostics and all the original costs. Firstly, does anyone have any suggestions about the likely cause and secondly how much false diagnosis and signifcant assosciated costs should I accept?!!!

A whistle is normal but it if is worse, check the big rubber bung in the firewall hasn't fallen out, allowing noise in the cab, check intercooler has not cracked or separated at the crimping, check intercooler hoses are well attached and not leaking. Check EGR valve body and manifold, use a short bit of garden hose up to your ear as a stethescope and place on each suspect area.

If it sounds a bit like a leaf caught in a fan, then I am afraid the turbo will soon die. How many k's has it done? 200,000 would be a lot for a ZD30 turbo. The bearing starts to fail and the turbine starts to contact things it shouldn't

Thanks nqgu,
The unit has done 325000 with a rebuilt engine and new turbo at 280000.
I have noticed an oil seal leak on the turbo. I wouldn't suggest a flapping sound but I did consider a broken fin in the turbo as the noise is more like a large parrot being tightly sqeezed.

It is unlikely to be broken vane as this would put the turbo way off balance and given the revs, destroy it. More likely the bearing clearances are knackered. Time for another turbo me thinks. I reckon when you pull it off you will find the turbine a tad wobbly.

My snorkel gets a high pitched vibration after it has been sitting in full sun for a couple of hours. I suspect the snorkel is warping under the heat.It goes away after i hose down the snorkel with water and doesnt happen on cool days/nights.

Hi 03turbo,
Thanks for the suggestion. However, I don't have snorkel yet.

Hi Banger,
Thanks for that input it was right on the the money.
