it appears to be leaking from the front of the pump when viewed from underneath, there are 2 bolts at the front just in front of where the leak comes from ..any ideas?

Could be the advance covers. Outside plate has two 10mm bolts and can be accessed easily, inside cover not so easy- pump off engine.

Post a pick if you can

There are a couple of seals up that way that can be corrupted by the common mixes of dino and bio diesel, leaving you with some quite annoying leaks and long term worries if not repaired. Generally they are a pretty easy fix for a diesel injection place, and maybe not even a really expensive fix too, but you'll hafta take it in to ask about it and to get it done! They are DEFINITELY NOT something that you really want to attempt yourself, even if you are fairly handy on the spanners, this task is listed in all the manuals as a "Leave this to specialist diesel pump technicians" task and that includes the Nissan manuals!

Cheers!

i had an old td42 pump on the workbench that was leaking and as a experiment we pulled it apart, never try this on a pump you plan to reuse as there is hundreds of tiny parts behind the head plate.
Yes some seals are easily replaced but it only causes another seal to start leaking.
There is a fuel solinoid on top of the pump at the rear which has a tendency to leak and this is easily replaced.
Leave injector pumps to the experts as peter has stated above.

this EXACT same thing happened to me. I have a 1991 GQ. I went on a 4 week bash out to the Canarvon National Park and wondered why I was only getting 7.5km/l.. though it was the roof rack loaded up. One night I saw the front diff glistening in the camp fire light - that was enough for me to investigate - at 1450rpm diesel was RUNNING out of the pump in the same place as you describe. I took it to a diesel guy in Lismore NSW and he promised a reco one for the price of the repair to mine - somehow I got a new one ($1300 - not bad). Anyway the internals of mine were F*&%$T - all kinds of stuff I don't understand - the mechanic couldn't believe it was still working.

Not going to be cheap I'd say but I am now getting 8.7km/l mix city/ highway/ off road (31" treads), power is back (as much as you can expect anyway!!)

The most common leak problem from under that cover plate held on with 2 bolts on the lower Drivers 'out' side (away from the engine) is a $5.00 (max) 'O' ring seal that will take all of 20 minutes to replace. It should be just a 'clean loose goop away from the plate & surrounds, take the plate off, pull the 'O' ring out, size the replacement, fit the new 'O' ring in, bolt the plate back, clean up the leaked diesel, job over' task!

So it is definitely something to check for BEFORE you start shelling out for a new pump, it might be that cheap and easy. If it's MORE than that 'most common' problem tho, it will be a bit exxy! Sorry.

Good Luck!
