What is involved in checking the timing on td42, I remeber when I had the 3L 2.8 lux you were supposed to have a special dial gauge to screw into the back of the pump, is it similar for the td42?

its an sst (specilist service tool)

you remove your injector lines out of the way so that you can get to the 12mm bolt that is in the centre of the back of the pump.

then fit a dial gauge to the sst and screw the sst into the back of the pump.

have the engine on tdc and then turn the engine backward while watching the dial gauge

when the dial stops moving stop and zero the gauge, this is the bottom stroke of the cam plate in the pump.

then turn the engine forward to the tdc mark, make sure it is perfectly on

then read the reading on the dialgauge and compare this to the specs for that engine.

HINT- to get the best performance adjust the pump the the higher end of the specs, this is advancing the timing

good luck
if im wrong feel free to correct me

Thats pretty much how I remember the 3L also

Doent suppose anyone knows what the specs for the td42 are?

Ive got a dial gauge and a bit of time to play, might have a go at adapting something to suit.

Thanx

The spec for the TD42 in the GQ is 0.74mm -+ 0.02mm at TDC
