Can anyone tell me how to adjust the fuel mixture (or where to find the adjustment bolt/nut) on a 3L 2.8 hilux diesel?

Couldn't find the answer anywhere here nor in my gregorys.

I just had it turned down because it was sending my trailer and load black and blinding everyone behind me, but the mech turned it down so much there is no smoke, it is way slower and at idle the dash all shakes......It just feels wrong, at half throttle it only does 1500 rpm in nuteral.

I need to find a happy medium, where it blows a little smoke but goes OK and as a matter of interest would like to understand it.

First get a diagram of the fuel pump (sorry I don't have one try google) so you are 100% sure that you are adjusting the correct screw, then turn only 60 degrees clockwise at a time. (60 degrees makes a big difference). your best bet unless you have pyro is to get it dyno tuned (about $165.00)

Recommend tuning by a diesel shop. Its a black art. AFR meters and dynos are all just tools it takes an expert to tune it right.

Older motors aren't that complicated. Whilst I'm not familiar with the 3L motor, it probably only has two external adjustments. One for your idle speed, the other for maximum fuel. Hopefully they are independant, that is, adjusting one doesn't affect the other. Idle speed - adjust up until the bad vibes settle down. Often a little higher than manufacturer's idle revs. The max fuel, just keep turning it up until the smoke starts getting excessive, at a level you're happy to live with, not too much. You'll have to trial and error this. As said, small adjustments. Go for a decent drive between adjustments. Might take a week of tweaking to get it right. This adjustment often has one of those lead crimped anti-tamper wires threaded through it, but if yours has already been adjusted it's probably gone.

Thanks trains & DJR. Is the 3L on the top rear of the injector pump housing, just above the idle stop solenoid, same as the 2.4?

1/4 turn in and it is going better than ever before. Have a steep hill in the 100k zone near home and I used to get 75 Km/h up it with heaps of black smoke. After mech turned it down to much I got 60 Km/h and now I get 82 with very little black smoke. What a difference....it sounds normal now. Thanks for the info guys.

Apparently mine is a surf pump and the adjustment is on the back of the pump at the top, had to remove throttle aas'y to see it.

A proper tune, with an EGT sensor will probably still be benificial.
may be more ponies in there yet, or if your on the wrong side of the tune (too much fuel) your EGT will be high and you will be getting a new head sooner than you think......

A proper tune is done to keep the Exhuast Gas Temp within safe limits, more fuel, means more power (to a limit) but also more heat.
Valves can melt if tuned too far.
If i remember correctly, around 450 degree's celcius is as far as most diesels can safely go....
