I have an XLT ranger and was in the same situation. Being a diesel, all the vacuum lines under the bonnet are exactly that.... vacuum. This is a very different situation to the turbo petrol setups I've grown up with.

The best place to plumb it in is into the plenum somehwere, however you will need to tap into it. Unless you are enspired enough to remove the plenum, this introduces the risk of foreign objects entering the motor.

In the end I settled for removing the intercooler outlet pipe (under the washer bottle), drilling a hole, welding a tapped collar onto it (effectively a nice looking nut) and then giving it a coat of black paint to match. I then purchased a brass olive fitting to screw into this which clamps tightly on the end of the pressure line to the gauge. The intercooler pipe pipe was simple to remove (2 nuts and 2 hose clamps), although I recommend removing the washer bottle and grille as it made it much easier.

I hope this helps. You'll be surprised how much boost the thing makes!

One other quick thing to note is don't buy a vac/boost gauge, just buy a straight boost gauge as the "vac" side is never used as diesels dont make vacuum like a petrol motor.

arent they a variable geometry turbo? if so they cant do much to make it boost harder as it the vanes are controlled by the computer.

was reading an interesting article in issue 136 of zoom (car magazine) very interesting talking about tuning common rail and variable geomentry turbos as there are no real upgrade turbo available they tlk about modifying the compresser housing. and they show and talk about the tunning differences between a chip that flashes the ecu and a chip that plugs into the injector rail. they tune a merc c220 CDI and a hyundai i30 CRDi. it was a great read well worth a look if you can find the issue;)
