Can someone tell me please what is a reasonably good anti virus program. I have supposedly got the you beaut never fail Norton anti virus and hey presto, all of the sudden everytime I switch my computer on all of my internet favorites have been changed and my home page is different. I have had a gutful of Norton's pathetic excuse for net protection. I go on to the internet for half an hour, do an Adaware scan and find about 25 new threats every time! >:(

Any suggestions? :-\

I don't think that spyware and antivirus programs go hand in hand.
I also doubt you'll find a different anti virus product with the resources and support that Norton/Symantec has.
My advice woul be stop d/l'ing porn................ ;D j/k ;)

Make sure you always update your Virus definitions and also update Adaware regularly too.

If your homepage is changed you have a spyware problem called the coolwebsearch worm. A system restore MAY fix the problem, but if not try a little program called CWShredder - available at a few free download sites like

http://www.spywareinfo.com/

what I use is Vet antivirus, AVG for a backup anti virus, Spybot Search and Destroy for spyware, CWShredder for homepage changes etc, and ZoneAlarm firewall (essential). And best of all they are all free!

I also use AGV Antivirus (http://free.grisoft.com/freeweb.php/doc/2/) and find it excellent and as has been said, it's totally free 8)

I also use a firewall apart from the one which is on Windows XP and find it also extremely effective in stopping problems.

You can get the firewall at Sygate Personal Firewall (http://smb.sygate.com/products/spf_standard.htm) which also is completely free. 8)

excellent, I was actually about to completely re-format anyhow as there appears to be a huuge amount of crap just clogging up the hard drive. Oh the joys of sharing a computer with four other family members. ::)

I also use Sygate, it's a very good firewall. Much better than the previuosly mentioned ZoneAlarm. I hated that dam thing, it wouldn't even let typical .gif images load among many other problems.

Mate if you want to keep it clean..... use Adaware SE professional... it's not very expensive and it does a lot more than the free version...... as for Anti-Virus...... Nortons is crap, always has been, always will be....... AVG Pro version 7 is cheaper than Nortons and if you set it up properly it runs very well without taking over your computer like NAV does...... and they do have support as well. I can sell you a copy of AVG pro for $65. Thats for a 2 year subscription, and i make no money out of it. Thats half the price of NAV

What if you do that once a week and it still runs like crap

then you have other issues with it...... you may have a shit load of rubbish starting in the background using your computers resources too heavily.

I useMcAfee Anti-Virus & firewall, as well as the firewall on Windows XP.
Cost is less than $100 per year & it auto-updates every time I connect.
IMO you get what you pay for ;)

expensive doesn't always mean good...... you pay nearly that much with Nortons...... and it's nowhere near the best on the market. I don't see the logic in running 2 firewalls...... The FREE firewall you get in SP2 is every bit as good as any i have seen on the market.

My two penneth worth, and I admit to being a Norton user. It can occasionally be dangerous to actually run two live Fire Walls at the same time - they can clash and create other problems than those they save. So far I am totally confident in Norton Virus and Norton Firewall - stopped everything that has come my way - sure at a cost of above some of the others. Live Update runs every time I turn the machine on and keeps the stuff current. It has picked up viruses that others with cheaper or free virus software have let thorugh.

I think Virus protection is a personal choice and I would reccomend that you try a heap of free ones [there is certainly enough out there] and if it does what you want it to do, then great!

I hate Norton but because I could never succesfully download all of the frickin crap it wanted me to download every time I logged on [live updates etc]

But I like Zone Alarm which alot of people hate. I tried the free version for a while and it worked for me so I bought the program, $100 US. To me it was worth it because I wanted to access all of the functions that were available on the bought version but that's just me.

It was a bit fiddly to configure at first because it stopped so much from happening, but once it's configured it just ticks along happily in the background doing the job.

so my advice, find one you like and stick with it!

hey zook, how are ya mate? did you leave the hotel?

Service Pack2 has a configurable firewall, and a popup blocker which both work very well..... saves ya spending a shit load of money.... all ya need then is a good anti-virus

I'm great Serena, how are you guys, yes I did leave the hotel, got sick of doing 90 plus hours a week and working every weekend. Got me a nice easy sales rep job for an industrial parts and automotive company in Bundy. ;D
