G'day,
Ok I have got my gorgeous red wrangler, which turns out to be a petrol guzzling monster, which I new it would, but I still absolutely love it (sad I know, loving a car).
Here is the question, has anybody converted their Wrangler to LPG? Where did they stick the tank (personal I know!)? How much can I expect to pay?
I know over here there are grants available ($2000 from the federal gov and $1000 from the state) does this cover it?
Do you then keep the petrol tank, and can it still run on petrol, so in theory it is like adding an additional tank? Do you get an additional fuel gauge for the LPG tank?
Thanks

Yeh... Keep the petrol tank... the LPG kit will come with its own electric gauge...
As for the tank placement.... mmmm not sure on a jeep... Don't think you would be able to fit a very large tank underneath...

I've only ever seen one wrangler converted to gas. They had put the tank in the back and had removed the rear seat. Looked very impractical to me.
Its not recommended to have gas fitted to any of the jeep 4.0 litre 6's, but in my experience the only problem I've come across is you will have the engine warning light coming on permanantly due to miss-fire codes. Goes off again after 3 good run's on petrol.

Need to keep the back seat, as the kids would complain to much if I stick them in the trailer!

redwranglertj. I know what you mean. A red and black TJ looks fantastic. However, what do you mean by a petrol guzzling monster. Just how bad is it?

I don't know what the figures are but it is thirsty (and I was fully aware of this before I bought it!) - I expect somebody on the forum could tell you the figures.
I am just looking at options at the moment as there are a couple of things that i want to do to it, new roof included and maybe an LPG conversion.
I think it would take a long time for a conversion to start paying for itself so am not sure it is worth it.
I know fuel is going up here but it is still half the price it is in the UK!

redwrangler, what I was getting at is what are your figures. I know what Jeeps generally return but like their drivers each car is an individual, some better than others. Was wondering if your consumption was outside the normal parameters. The only way to ascertain fuel consumption properly is to maintain a log book over several weeks of your normal use and go from there. Seat of the pants guess is useless. Cheers.

I dont know for the TJ, but lve got an XJ on gas and it was the best thing l did. I didnt think the jeep were so bad on fuel. I get 500km from the fuel (77lts) and 350km from the gas (65lts). My old cruiser had a 4lt engine with a 90lt tank and only got 400km from tank (that with 35" tyres on it)

TJ runs at 23 miles to the gallon or 16l/100ks so they are thirsty, I have a 2001 model and love it.
It will be traded at the end of the year for a Unlimited 4 door Turbo Diesel which is getting about 9l/100k so in theory doubling my economy so i shall be very happy indeed.
There are loads of stuff on the internet for Wranglers but the fuel useage will always be a issue with the 4l petrol donk.
When you add up the fun factor of the Wrangler its worth the cost in my mind. :drink: :truck: :waycool:

Hi Tassie,
Where did they stick the tank? Did they just swap it for the petrol tank? Those sort of figures are renewing my interest in LPG.

I still have the fuel tank in (acts as a long range tank), the gas tank sits behind the back seat. Does take up a lot of room, but building a false floor over it. I think the gas system was the best l got done, but if the gas prices keep going the way they are, it wont worth it.
