I'm trying to change the pinion seal on my front diff (LN106 Lux) but can't undo the nut (the one on the pinion, visible after removing the drive shaft)!

I've removed the 'punched in bit' on the nut, tried heating it, rattle gun on full and so far bent 2 breaker bars on it.

Is there a trick to it? Something I'm missing?
It's not a left hand thread, is it?

Please help before I do my nut (pun intended)!

If it was me..

I'd use a lot of heat

then hit each face of the nut with a good sized hammer. enough to jar apart the siezed / rusted threads.

then try again with a big bar :)

These nets are done up real tight. Put it in gear, handbrake on real tight, and use a tension wrench with a piece of pipe on the end of it.

Yep as hicountrycruiser said, they can be done upto 450+ nm depending on required preload. Put the hubs in, in gear, brake on and wheels chocked. Use a bit of heat and a big ass breaker bar with a length of pipe (think i used a piece about 2m long last time and had to jump on it)

NO NO NO!! Torque wrenches are ONLY for applying torque to do up nuts and bolts. NOT for undoing them!!

Use a breaker bar!!

as pig dog said....NNOOO to the tension wrench.....they are a precision tool.....even when doing bolts up , you should use a std rachet first and only use the torque wrench at the end......

Youd be pretty pissed if you abuse a tension wrench then next time you use it do do head studs , the wrench is in accurate and the head gasket goes ..or when doing up connies and in 6mths a bearing spins!!

use as Red Rocket said use the breaker bar ( and tube if necessary)

The one I use is the spring loaded one with the handle you turn to increase torque. Unwound to zero, I thought it would have no effect. Didn't want to go bending a breaker bar and the tension wrench has a nice long thick handle. Ah well, got a big breaker bar now.

Still not worth the risk though.

You won't bend breaker bars if you slide the pipe all the way up to the head.

The easiest way to stop the flange from turning so you can undo the nut, is to get a piece of square tube and weld a piece of flat plate to one side with holes drilled in so it will bolt up to one side of the flange. The square tube i used is about two feet long. You should be able to undo the nut with a 1/2 inch drive breaker bar when you can hold the flange securely. :thumb:
