Did you notice any loss in fuel economy with the 33s??

I ran 4:88 gears with 33" tires for years. It was one of my daily drivers. 4:88 is a good strong gear. It's a good gear for 33"-35" tires. But if you are worried about fuel mileage go with a taller gear. It may bring up your rpm's on the highway a bit. I still run 4:88's with my 39" tires. It a trail rig only.

You need to find out what your standard ratio is and go up by 2. For example if you have 4.1s then go to 4.56 if you have 4.3 then go 4.88. Thats the simple way I think from memory that the V6s are either 3.9 or 4.1 but I am not 100%

Personally I would sort out what is in there, if you have 4.1 and go 4.8 you will be revving the vehicles ring out on the highway and your speedo will read fast ;)

krusty, do what i did and go and see your local toyota dealers spare parts dept, give them the axle code on your tag under the bonnet and they will be able to tell you your ratio's, my TD30 2003 sr5 is 3.7

Best way is to check what you have first i know 2 of that model year 1 had 3.7s the other 3.9s if you are sticking to 33s then 4.88 will rev maybe to high for you if going to 35s then the 4.88 will be okay as both theses guys went to 35s.

Gearing is important for your power also so do it right and do it once.

ive spoken to ryan at snake who said that 4.88 should see 110kmh at 2800rpm.does that sound correct? 02 yes that is for brand new gears. will let you know.

Im gonna go to toyota tommorow and get the ratio. Then do some calculations and save some money. So do you reckon 4.88s will do??

No it doesnt I reckon it would be more like 3000rpm.

No if you are in fact running 3.9s then 4.3s will see you get everything right if you were running 39s then yeh 4.88s would be good. If you are after getting back all the standard speedo etc then you need to go no more than 2 ratios for 33s hence 3.9 to 4.3. Or in my case I went 4.3 to 4.8 and mine is revving at 2600rpm at 100. You really need to sort out what your ratio is now and then decide.

yea boof i checked with toyota, mine std. are 4.1.does that mean to bring it back to std 4.56 would be the go.if so 4.88 would rev a touch harder on freeway but be better off road?

boof

yeh I would go 4.56 I reckon 4.88 will be too high.

if my revs are app,2100 at 100 at the moment with 33s and 4.1s,then with 4.56 they should be app 2600.does that sound correct.if 4.88 then at 100 it would be 2850?that would be a bit high for long highway runs but would be awsum offroad.i really dunno which way to go.

Its simple 4.56 will take it back to what it was standard if you want low range in the bush fit crawler gears or dual cases running 4.88s for a slightly lower low range makes no sense to me.

yea point taken.4.56 seems the logical way to go.get all back to std.will do.

Your V6 manula like my old one ran a 4.1 : 1 ratio, to work out what ratio would bring the most "like stock" performance this is how you would work it out-

4.1 ratio (divided by) 29 being the stock diameter tyre of the hilux = 0.1413793

Now multiply that last number by the diameter in inches of the tyre you wish to run, being 33 inches = 4.67:1

They dont make a gear of that ratio obviously, and 4.88:1 would rev out too high on the freeway and kill your economy even more.

therefore with 4.5:1 ratio and 33's it would drive like your vehicle stock with slightly lower revs than before but barely noticeable.

I don't think you would even notice the crawl difference between 4:56 and 4:88. But you would notice the difference between them on the highway.
