G'Day all, just wondering if anybody out there can give me a comparison on these engines. I have a Hilux SR5 XCab 4x4 3L with a watercooled turbo. I regularly do long trips in northern WA & get returns from 17-20lts/100klms. I think this is pretty sh!*ty considering the price of diesel & the average performance from this vehicle. The 2.8 is getting a little tired so an engine swap is on the cards, not only for the above reasons but also better performance & driveability. Any help will be greatly appreciated. Regards Jaz.

If your not happy with the fuel economy, your gonna be shocked with the commodore V6 or the V8. Get the 3L checked out by a diesel mechanic. Should be getting about 12L per 10km's.
My 1uz-fe can get as low as mid 11L/100ks on the highway and 14s around town. I average 16L/100ks around town but am not light on the go pedal, my old 3rz-fe was no better so I am more than happy with the figures.

I got a VR V6 in a Surf and Lux ute. I'm heavy on the pedal and get between 17 - 20 per hundred on LPG, city driving.
Did a 200Km trip the badly tuned ute the other day, full at start then fill at finish and it was about 5.4Kms P/L

Thanks Dave, I am a diesel fitter & other than a little to much fuel or maybe tired squirters it must be the weather cond's or my right thong. Am going to try new inj's shortly.

Thanks Boof, have had 1uz's on my mind for a while now. Even if the consumption figures ended up comparable the performance & driveability would be greatly enhanced. Even more with some ratio changes that would suit longer distance driving.

My ecotec commobore wagon regularly gets 10.5 l/100kms on the highway @ $1.20 on cruise with family & all their stuff. Add air con it starts pushing 13 l/100km's. Round town though it's rather awful.
My 3L 4runner trickles around town - low 8's but I'm content to chug along in 5th at 60km. Don't do highway's in it.
Hope that helps.
