My Cruiser has developed a shudder when the clutch grabs as I take off and it appears to be getting worse. I haven't had a chance to look at it yet as its been raining for the past week. Any ideas? Could this be a simple gearbox mount or something more sinister

did you feel that the pedal change in the place ( height ) that the clutch " engage " ..?

I would be checking simple things like tranny mounts and engine mounts first. But you may find that your flywheel has hot spots or the clutch in on its last legs. Check around the bellhousing area for signs of a rear main leak

Clutch shudder is a feature of the 80 series.... there will be heaps of threads on heaps of forums... apparantly Toyota don't even know how to fix it.

What you might find is that when the weather fines up the shudder will be gone... I find that mine tends to be worse on damp days.. maybe the plate takes on some condensation..

When mine gets unbearable I pull the handbrake (not the wife) on and give the motor a few revs and let the clutch out letting it slip a bit as I do... this tends to score off any bits that might be stuck to the plate and makes the clutch smooth again for a while until it starts to grab again.. This is sure to wear the clutch out quicker but I am prepared to cross that bridge when I get to it.

Best of luck.

Yeah I agree - Oil / grease on your clutch plate. I had a 1 tonner that suffered from the exact same symptoms.

As Sea-Dog said. Very common for the 80 and no real fix except for heavy duty clutch.
