Well I geuss I had it coming but finally blew the trusty old 2.8 (3L) full noise up a hill and bang oil & smoke and rattles, blew a hole in the top of no4 piston, pressurised the crank and blew the hose oil hose off the bottom of the turbo. Quite a mess, when I pulled the head off all the other pistons had cracks in the tops as well, probably explain the increasing blow by. Anyhow the question to the gurus is does the 1kz-te pistons fit a 3L 2.8 I have an idea they have the same bore 96mm but different stroke, being the 1kz-te is designed for a turbo it would be good to fit the pistons to a 2.8 so as to prevent blowing holes in the pistons.

ill be watching this thread as my 2.8 has started blowing a little more smoke then usuall. might have to pull me motor apart and check it all.

Probably should mention that I was running 15psi but I think the damage was already done before I cranked it up from the 10psi the turbo was set up with. The motor had 175000 when I put the turbo on and its just clicked over 230000. What would cause the pistons crack? to much heat ie. to much boost & fuel I thought would melt the tops rather than crack them.

Thermal fatigue in the piston material causes cracking. The fatigue is caused by abnormal combustion conditions, such as incorrect timing or over-fuelling. Over-boosting on its own wont cause it but over-boosting and over-fuelling will. Use either ART or Toto pistons when you rebuild it. I have seen non-genuine (yep-Chinese) pistons do the same thing after less than 20,000km in an after-market 3L (2.8). Stick to 500 deg C EGT taken as close to the turbine outlet as possible, when doing your final tuning.

thanks dakr61, I ordered the rebuild kit today, should have it up and running shortly and will definetly check the EGT, and adjust acordingly.

I've been running 11psi since fitting the dts kit mine has at 135,000 k's. It's up to 270,000 now and still runs as well as the day I fitted the kit and got someone else to tune it.
The shop that tuned mine said that the golden rule with a 2.8 is no more than 11/12psi.

Hi guys .. new here and some commetns
I thought apart of the amount of PSI that you run in your engine, it's more concern to EGT and water temp ..
If you have good shape injectors ( means injection pathern ) with safe EGT 1200F ie .. and keep normal water temp ( 200F ) with a apropiate intercooler can go over 15 PSI without problems ..
IMOP a nice rule to play with turbos .. it's in NA engines with 14 PSI or more, run a proper sized intercooler.

Yer the 15psi boost and advanced fuel pump wud hav defently killed the motor. 230000km is low km for a 3L to shit itself, 15 psi is gettin way up ther as far as recommended boost limits for the 3L, I'd be adding a decent water/air intercooler and maybe even diesel/gas kit to help keep the intake temperatures cooler and offset the extra heat caused by more fuel/boost. Defently aim to keep the pyro reading at or below 500c. and maybe even wind the boost back to 10-12psi till u hav an intercooler fitted.
