This post will be small comfort to those who have had cars stolen...but, we can work towards reducing the number of four wheel drives stolen and eventually make this section of the forum redundant...IF....we identify what state the vehicle was in when stolen.

For example....locked, car had an alarm system that did or didnt go off, or car was parked with doors unlocked but keys with the owner and so on.

If those of us who have been fortunate thus far in not having our fourby nicked can understand why othe fourby's are getting stolen, and in what state or situation they were in when they were stolen, then we can take some concrete steps towards theft proofing our own cars.

Please....if you post you car as stolen, identify the condition it was in as far as locked/unlocked/ etc, we can progresively close the opportunities available to the scum perpertrating this upon us as a community, and all win.

If the vehicle is found to be unlocked don't most insurance claims end up void then? I.e. you can not claim on them?

Are there any regulations about connecting a 20,000 volt capacitor up to the drivers seat ;-)
At least that way you would only have to replace the seat cover when they s**t themselves

UNFORTUNEATELY there IS a law against it, as its considered to be a man trap. (Dammit)
Your not even allowed to have the doors lock automaticly, trapping the perp in the car, with the heater on full and the radio playing "jessus loves you" music at full volume. Although i think if you are capable of having this happen the police would be happyer :thumb: with it than the 20 kv shock.

A mate had a lock on the transmission shift of his old Ford ute, that he fashioned out of a door deadbolt or something -
Putting a locking device on the stubby stick would have to be helpful... Just a thought.

For GQ owners want to see how easy it is. next trip see how many other GQ doors you can unlock or start with your key, its scary.

if they want your car they will get it, so just need to make it as unatractive as possible, you want the car next to you to be the one. visible lock like a club lock. alarm with a screamer under the dash on both sides. so loud it hurts to be in the cabin and one in the engine bay near the battery.

A hidden cut of switch slowes em down so that with luck by the time they work out that it has one you or someone has heard them attempt to start it. It helps if youre truck is loud

Geez, paranoid much. Mate I work for an insurance company. Does that mean I can't be a member of the forum and enjoy 4WDing? NO!

As far as leaving your doors unlocked, accidents happen. Their not going to void the claim. If you tell them that you never lock your doors, it might be a problem.

Cheers

Mate same deal as leaving it unlocked. With any claims as long as you are open and honest with the company you should not have any problems (All companies may have slight differences). Try to be dodgy and they won't be kind.
Easiest way to find out is call your company (as long as you get someone who knows their arse from their elbow that is).

Cheers

Just to refer back to the original post though. I don't see how posting that the car was left unlocked would in anyway benefit reducing vehicles being stolen. Information such as location, times and any distinguishable characteristics of the vehicle stolen would be far more beneficial. I mean who doesn't check out someone else's 4WD when they drive past it, I know I do. My 2 cents worth.....

How much fruit you have is a factor too. If you're going to nick a fourby, are you going to take the poverty pack, or the one with spotties, winch, GPS, fridge, racks loaded with recovery gear, CB radio and other stuff easily and unbtraceably hocked at the local pub? Ditto with large brand stickers that advertise.

Much as I'd like to keep my fourby kitted out, I prefer to pack most of my gear away so my fourby look bland. When packed, everything is under a cargo net/tarp.

As to security (and the orignal post), locked or not doesn't really matter on older trucks. My old work had a problematic car park and my fourby nearly got nicked. They just focred to door lock with a screwdriver and used a self tapping bolt to pull the ignitiion barrel out. Very luckily for me the barrel broke and a chunk stayed at the bottom. You need additional security, most fourbys have all the theft resistance of a HQ Kingswood. At least get a kill switch.
