I am looking at buying a BJ47 diesel for my son but need to know how hard it is to convert to power steering instead of arm strong steering

Its either a HJ47 lwb or a BJ42 swb. Easiest way is to get the gear off a model that had it. I think the last of the BJ42 had it in 82-84 (so you must have a 47).
Only problem is ,most of the available 42 have been stripped of their P/S.
You might be able to use some parts off a HJ75. It will have a 2H engine similar to the 47.
The pump will be easy to find, the power steering box not so.

Yep, what he said. The 75 box will take a bit of fitting, but it is a popular conversion because it does away with the idler box. 60 boxs are a popular conversion as well.

What do you have to do to fit the 75 series P/S box,any drilling of new holes ect.

Yes. They mount down on the chassis in front of the axle. You need to line it up, drill holes and fit crush tubes in the chassis. Not sure what they do for steering arm back to the firewall, probably use the 75 rod as well. I have also known of people fitting the 60/75 column in there 40s as well.

to do a 75 series or 60 series conversion (60 series is cheaper if you don't have the parts already).
you need, 60 series steering arms off the knuckles (these won't work with drum brakes, so if you have drums, get the whole 60 series knuckle, and that way you get disks as well) cut down 60 series or standard 75 series tie rods/drag link and tie rod ends. 60 or 75 series box. 75 series intermediate shaft (from column to steering box).
the column needs to be changed.
a 75 series or 60 series column needs some mods to the firewall to fit, and some rewiring for indicator stalks. 75 series is ideal as you get adjustable column.
or you can use a 55 series column. tehy're getting a little thin on the ground, but go in without mods, and you can use your original indicator stalks etc.
if going the 55 series column (and possibly the 60 series, never done it), you need an 80 series rag joint to adapt the intermediate shaft spline to the steering column spline.
apart from that, you need a plate to act as a spreader plate where you bolt the steering box to, and crush tubes in the chassis (bits of tubing for the bolts to go through).
oh and then you need a 2/3 belt harmonic balancer pully for the 2h, and a power steering pump to suit (both available of the HJ60's)
