Gday folks,

Sooooo, just came out from under the fourby admiring a mass of messy oil around both my wheels (worse on passenger side). The link below is to a thread with a photo very similar!

http://www.4wdmonthly.com.au/forum/f10/help-please-oil-out-everywhere-43309/

Not quite as bad but you get the idea.

First of all thinking of doing it myself. The car is an 85 4runner so really not worth paying someone to do it. Clearly the inner and outer seals on the swivel hub will need doing and while Im at it the hub bearing may/may not also get replaced, and definately regreased.

Im also going to replace the front disc rotors/pads. A discussion has been posted in General 4x4 Tech about this.

My question is what else should be done while Im at it? I really want to finish this job knowing that the brakes/front hubs etc will last quite a while without further maintenance. Im also going to do the rear drum linings at the same time + replace brake fluid.

Thanks in advance,

Marky

There are other parts in there but they should all be in the swivel hub kit. I did mine about 2 years ago and it is due again although I am pretty hard on it and do a lot of beach driving. I hope you don't find any ceased slave cylinder pistons as i did, as they can be a real bugger to get out. Cheack all the surfaces where the seals run as it is very common for them to be grooved out. If they are, get some speedy sleaves from the bearing shop.

How much should I be budgeting for all of this? ie swivel hub kit for both sides etc? Also some rough prices on the disc rotors/pads would be sick!

I think my swivel hub kit was $160, rotors $120, disk pads $60 and rear shoes about $50. You can add another $70 for oil, grease and 10 litres of something to clean it all in. I just used petrol last time.

You can probably double these for genuine parts.

So for the rotors and pads is that for one side or both?

Both, but I did get it all at trade. Here's a pair on ebay for $89

No dramas. So its worth doing the wheel bearings while im up to my arms in grease? Im going to rip the hub off tonight and check out the condition of the bearings just to check. How much pric difference would there be between the two?

I am about to do the same rebuild on a 90 model hilux. I figure for the 20 bucks or so each side it is worth doing the wheel bearings while it is all apart rather than finding them shagged out a year or so later and having to pull half of it apart again.

I am just waiting for a free weekend to do it in but not looking like i have one of those till the new year

Ok so I got a quote for a few parts:

Proteq front disc rotors - $38.10 each side
Bendix 4wd pads - $81.55 a set (is a set one side or both?)
Front wheel bearing - $39.95 a side
Rear brake shoes - $33.10 for both sides
Swivel hub kit - $93 each side

Does this sound fair? For the price of the hub kit do you think that would include wheel bearings? The bloke wasn't too sure. So what are peoples thoughts? Worth going for?

By the way I took the hub cover off last night and oil started pissing out so just gonna hit everything at once I reckon. I might leave the wheel bearings untill I check their condition. They may be allright in which case Id rather keep the $80..

prices seem fair. also check out ebay if you are comfortable shopping there. i have got some great deals on seal kits etc before and they have been bought of places that are 4x4 shops that also sell stuff on ebay

Just having a look on Ebay and Ive found a place "The 4wd Shop" that runs on there. Here is a link:

eBay Shop - The4wdshop: Toyota: Front Seal Kit Toyota Landcruiser 40 45 47 60 61 62 75 (http://stores.ebay.com.au/The4wdshop_Toyota_W0QQcolZ4QQdirZ1QQfsubZ5173064QQ ftidZ2QQtZkm)

Anyway they have a swivel kit on there for $70 (both sides i think) and wheel bearing kits for $25 each side.

Much cheaper than the previous quotes! Is it worth going for this one do you guys reckon?
