g'day, has anybody out there blown up an 80 series gear box? if so what was the cause if known?

Back in the mid to late 90's there was a big batch of 80 series gearboxes dying, clutch and mainshaft totalling the internals I think, certainly a big job to repair but it was a fair while back and I thought that most with issues were caught and repaired (I believe under a warranty of some sort)! Only heard of a couple of people having any issues getting a new gearbox, largely easily proven abuse, but like I said, it was at least 10 years ago - making it probably over 100,000km under the wheels since!

Hope you get it sorted!

A few years ago I thought I'd blown mine up. Stomped it from an intersection and it went bang...crunch. Was losing drive under slight acceleration. Limped to the mechanics.
They stripped the gearbox and found a bit of wear and tear but no explosion.
They said the transfer seemed ok. Told em to strip that too, found the first main drive gear had stripped it's drive spline. Bingo. $700 worth of shaft and gear.
$2000- 3000 to fix that and rebuild the gearbox as well.

There probably has been some early cases as peter said but in general they are tough as nails. The only real issue you have with them is syncros, theyre not the smoothest box around, I have just had mine rebuilt and it took a little while to get the gear changes to settle down but its all sweet now. Other than that they can suffer from general wear and tear items like input shaft bearings etc but this happens to any box with high k's.

Yeah, certainly haven't heard of many self destructing since about 1995-96, BUT how many km's have they all done now?? That last bit is probly the most pertinant bit!?? Anything that IS worn now is going to contribute to failures in the future, probably sooner rather than later, and there will be LandCruisers of that sort of vintage with some significant Wear issues?!

Maybe time for a pre-emptive re-build! Often these sorts of things are a relatively minor issue that can be a fiddly fix (maybe even a bit costly) except there is not actually anything WRONG until it becomes a major problem (very expensive fix??!) and a real drawback at the time! Get in early, find out the bits it's likely to be and resolve/replace them so that you can easily count on the next 100k km's fairly readily!

Might save some grief later, altho braveheart I'm guessing that you have some pressing reason for asking??! Your Gearbox packed it in?

nah it hasn't blown up yet but it has a shocking rumble, in neutral and all foward gears except fourth, i stuck the transfer in neutral and ran it through the gears and fourth was quiet so maybe the input and counter shaft bearings, also third/fourth gear synchro has some issues, im having to double the clutch and give her a rev to down shift from fourth to third, i feel like a bloody truckie. the problem has been getting worse over the last six months or so.

I'd say your synchros are definately gone. As others have said it was a problem with them. On the earlier models thay had single synchros, which wenht to triple synchros on later models (not sure exactly when). It helped the problem, but didn't solve it. You'll first notice it in 2nd gear going up the gears and 3rd gear coming down.
The earlier single synchro models were good for about 250k before they needed stripping for (at least) synchro replacement, and the later models were good for about 3ooK (I think).

But it's not too expensive. If it's just the synchros it'll be about $1700 - a bit more depending on what else needs doing. Just had mine done and it cost $2400.

I know you can stuff 5th gear if you try and tow with it ,Because its an overdrive gear it cant handle the pounding when towing .So the rule is 1234 for towing, 5 for cruising .Cost me $3,500 to get it fixed .

sorry for thread hijack :/

Mine to0, use to crunch a bit from 4th to 3rd at pace (250k's on it). Got told to never use a gearbox additive and try " Penrite Ultra Ultra thin Gearbox Oil " after flushing box. After this the box was definately smoother and didn't crunch as half as much when it was cold. Not sure on the proper name, but it was definately the thinnest Gearbox oil Penrite made. Repco had it on the shelf late last year when i changed oil.
Box still feels good as all boxes should ............. ;)

Hope this helps

If you haven't noticed anything then there's probably nothing wrong. First thing you'll notice is that it'll be crunchy going from 1st to 2nd. But even when that starts happening, it doesn't mean you've gotta do it straight away. I was getting some other stuff done, so I had it all done at once....

Are the 80 boxes the same as the 75s?

Cuase mine is bad from 1st to second (try it on a winters morning, its like driving a crash box, you have to double the clutch to get to 2nd) and also 4th & 5th make a bit of a growl on the highway which gets worse under tow and on hills.

no walt 75's are different to the 80's. the 75's are more robust.

Pretty sure there the same as the 80's in the DX and Base models. The GXL has a stronger box (not sure how) due to being all time 4wd.
Try the oil i mentioned above to free up syncros. Can't hurt.
Seem to work on my box.

I stand corrected, they might be the same as the GXL.

Well yes and no... ;)

HJ75 / HZJ75's use the H55F box, FZJ75's use the H150F.

80's use the H150F or H151F depending on engine variant.

Yeah I agree totally, if something is slightly off get it looked at, better off costing you 2k now then a whole trip out in the middle of nowhere

If you have no crunching and no noises I wouldnt be too concerned. Drop the oil out of it, this will give you a good idea of whats going on inside the box. Is the oil clean, if so its a good sign, dirty oil or oil with metal shavings in it is a definite worry

Yes - I have heard this too. I was discussing my crunchy g/b with my diesel mechanic (Wollongong diesel) and he told me that the Toyota recommended oil was a bit too thick, and sometimes you can solve the crunching problem by going to a thinner oil. I might chase up this Penrite stuff

I blew a box in my old HZJ75 towing a boat from Brissy up to Bowen just as i was coming into Childers.. Lost all gears apart from 4th.. The box was shot and not much more damage could have been done so the decision was made to limp her home.. I made plenty of calls and had mates lined up to tow the boat and tojo home if all else failed.. She made it and i've never towed in 5th gear again in that ute or my 79 series RV. Toyota tough i reckon.. Try doing that in a datsun lol
