Changing the ball joints on my 97 Hilux. I was given the wrong torque setting for the 4 studs on the upper and lower ball joints and snapped one stud.

Anyone tell me what the correct tension is, both upper and lower and the the morse taper nut that holds the ball to the hub assemby.

Please?

After 23 years of being a Back-Yarder, when tightening those things, I just know by the feel of the tension I place on the spanner.

I have some of those studs lying around spare, but I'm in QLD

What you call "hub assembly" is the "steering knuckle"

While you have it apart, why not get some Ball Joint Spacers from ebay?

Thanks for that V6. Just what I needed.

Tell me more about the Ball Joint Spacers? What do they do? Any negatives? Where do they go, between ball joint body an upper and lower control ams?

Thank Dave.

Dave,

They go above the upper BJ. They give you 1" lift without adjusting your torsion bars. May allow you to put bigger rubber on the front. Will return some down travel in front suspension if your torsion bares are fully wound up. Can be fitted with UCA still in place.

Negative - may not be legal, but it's hard to spot them. They can be removed and vehicle returned to standard very easilly. Need to get a wheel alignment after install.

BTW, you can reuse the studs from your old BJs, as they are easy to remove in a vise or socket or press. Just don't damage the thread. Use something like hardwood or copper hammer to extract them.

Thanks for that V6. That what I did; punched the old studs out of the original BJs with a copper dolly with the nut on the top of the stud.

Where do yo get the spacers, what store on ebay?

Thanks

Dave

Easy to find if you search on eBay. They are $190 posted Aus wide. A bit cheaper if you PM me about them.

If you cant find the eBay listing, send me a PM and I will give it to you.

Pm MR DJ on this forum as he makes the kits up and sells for aroudn the $250 mark. As for torque figures, I think there un needed, just tighten the nut till u feel its tight. A dob of locktite will stop them loosing also. Cheers
