hi i am considering bying a uhf radio is portable of fixed better
Fixed UHF usually has better reception, and portable is ...well portable. You can take it with you if you are going for a walk, and stay in touch

all depends on the quality and the out put of the unit.
Some hand held one's can give a good out-put but a car mounted antenna will normally be a lot better.
As long as it is mounted properly.
most of the handheld uhf have the capability of of around 5 watts which is what a standard one would have and car kits are fairly common these days i sell them at work and after my ford got flogged i put a hand held in it if i had to do any trips where a uhf was needed !
this not only stopped theft cos i could take it with me but serves a great unit for enduro bike riding which i ger into they have vox operated ones these days and its like a mobile phone piece that just sits in the ear great if you wear a helmet !

I have both
Portable as very limited range, fixed has much longer range.
Also if using portable, is a pain to use while driving.

I have mine mounted over head and a few time's I have had to let go of the hand peice real quick, when a sharp bend or a tree across the track show,s up.
Swings about and has contacted with the head a few time's too, but at least I know it will still be where I leave it and not fall off a seat or out the window.

I have both (plus am)....I find I used the handheld most of the time.....it's just so danged versatile.....
With my roof down - I've go no chance of hearing my incab cb, with the handheld I slip on the Voice Activated head set and I can sit on 100KM/h roof down & talk away - better yet I can hear other people....but that's a softtop thing,
One you get to a camp spot you can wander about & keep incontact,
If you need to spot someone you just grab it and can talk to them via the CB rather than yelling at 'em,
In comps again with the head setyou have 2 spare hands to drive, or if your naving to scrable over rocks or drag winch cables etc....
also they are great when you go to watch comps you can sit on the sideline listening to the driver & nav.....
Seriously if I was to just buy one - I'd go hand held everytime - unless frequent long distance were needed....

why not get both then if you are away from the car or in recovery mode you can always talk to your mate
