I attempted to tune the carb on my FJ62 yesterday using the Gregory's Manual. Im not convinced I have done it correctly - can some one explain how to tune the carb from scratch?

The book suggested tuning the mix screw to get the highest revs and then adjusting the idle screw to get 690rpm. Repeat this until the revs don't change regardless of where the mix screw is turned and then turn the idle down to obtain 650rpm idle.

I don't seem to be able to do this at all. Two turns either way seem to cause teh revs to fluctuate down slightly.

Chances are it was probably ok before i fiddled but i suspect it is running far richer than it needs to and so wanted to check it out. Plus having not had experience with this type of carb before (only SUs) I'd like to learn how to set it up properly.

i tried tuning my carb the other day, turned out that i also needed to adjust my ignition timing and need the condensor and points on my dizzy replaced(i think these are the right names) i got lazy tho and got a mechanic to do it for me with a timing light. (i love watching other people work)

anyway if you havent done it and its running rough it might be good to check your ignition as well.

Thanks, but did all that yesterday. It was running basically ok after I gave it a full service (although the choke needed adjustment) and i thought i'd have a crack at carb tuning too (never done it for this truck before). The Gregory's manual doesn't seem to explain the process very well... :(

you get that i have a ellory manual, wish i had the FSM's but i dont yet, i found that i was running way too rich after my rebuild and had to screw the idle mixture screw right down. its a weird motor sounds like its gonna stall when idling but when you put your foot down it roars, i do have some slight engine mods tho.

Just been to a carb specialist and hooked up to their CO2 meter and it turns out i was spot on..! Surprise even myself!

GOLD.

After tuning so many cabys, I ended up being able to tune by ear, and then double check with the co meter.
Did my last tune up without the meter, set it........checked later.......spot on.
