I'm never really going to load my 4Runner up, so do I need the brake proportioning valve? and how can I remove it? I think its just another thing to go wrong.

I say "no" - but that's an unqualified view, there may be good reasons to keep it. I removed mine for a few reasons, I have an a-frame set up in the rear and it wouldn't fit or attach properly, and then I wanted to use the space that it sat in, so I asked a brake shop to remove it and they did without any objection.

I was going to scrap mine but thought if I had an accident or wanted to sell it, then I'd have problems explaining why it was missing. Also on the odd chance of having your truck loaded, it would be a good idea to keep it. My truck has a 3 inch spring lift so I bought a proportion valve extender plate from Superior Engineering for around $20.

I can see where Beej is coming from though, as it is in an awkward spot for a /\ shock set up. I have been told that you can cut the connector rod at the valve on the chassis and zippy tie it up. This is what I have been told but I do not advise it at all. Better off modifying than destroying.

Might have dramas with the insurance company if you remove it.

Have a serious accident and it will pay to know a REAL good lawyer

Found out its rusted open so the rear brakes don't really work at the moment!
Going to try and fix it and modify it (lower bracket) so it works with the lift.
