as the title sugest,
yeaterday i was talken to the local 4wd wrecker. i currently have N/a 2l and a 5spd in a 1982 single cab lux. he said a 5L would fit straight upto my gearbox and straight in. as long as i got mechanical fuel pump.
does anyone know if there is any truth to this?
also how much power can a turboed 5L make?
surfed the web and the name tha kept poping up was denco turbo kit.
arte they any good?

All the L series are basically the same block so it would fit. The 5L is good enough on its own but a turbo would give you heaps more. I would say about 120hp maybe more if tweeked properly.
Just have a look yourself and take some measurements before you buy and get a second opinion first. There are many turbo kits you can get and they are pretty much all the same. The 5L should com with a mechanical injector pump but it might be a bit different but I'm not sure. It should all fit up.

yes will bolt straight up, only u may hav to put ur 2L bellhousing on the 5L as I think 5L's run a R150 box and 2L's the G52 ( may be the same tho). If u can come cross a 5LE that wud be better again as it is a NA EFI version of the 5L and responds very well to a mod chip and aftermarket turbo addition. Im pretty sure all the N/A L series other then the 5LE and 2LTE share the same mechanical style fuel pump (2LT mech pump obviously boost compensated). Cheers

All i can say is the 5L is a good motor (in my opinion). Its not the worlds fastest but im quite happy with what mine does. Fit some extractors and 3inch pipe and they are good. Ill eventually turbo mine i think but im happy now!

I wudnt worry to much about extractors as they dont seem to make a worthwhile difference, They defently make the motor sound better and rev a little easier but nothing special. Save ur pennys and add a turbo and 21/2" mandrel pipe. Most people in the know with hilux's and turbos will tell u anything over 21/4" pipe is just for noise alterations, even the garret turbo glide setups only output enough hot gas at full noise to warrant a 21/4" pipe, Its only a little motor remember and u dont want it to sound like a continuous sloppy fart driving down the road. 21/2" mandrel bend with no mufflers is the perfect setup for turbo hiluxs IMHO.

thanks guys,
i think 5l turboed would be a cheap alternative then the 1uz, fuel and fitting.
plus gotta love hte sound of a tubo diesel boosting up:waycool:

While i do agree. The 5LE would be better again for the reasons mentioned. Just don't forget that to install a 5LE you need: the whole engine harness, ECU, all sensors, inlet butterfly (including throttle motor) and you will also need to get a throttle pedal as the 5LE are 'drive by wire', no cables involved, all electronic throttle. Thats just my list so far, i think thats it but i havn't got mine installed yet.

If u bought a complete 5LE it wud come with all the necessary internal sensors already in the block rite and harness and factory ECU (Id go aftermarket management to make adding a turbo easier), rigging up a different pedal configuration couldnt be all that hard just time consuming. How many external sensors does the 5LE hav? AFM? The inlet butterfly and throttle body wud come with the motor also im sure? Shud be a good swap ull hav to do a rite up on it when u do it. Cheers

If ur going to do that then I would suggest a complete front cut. Otherwise you would be searching for all the wiring etc.....A lot of work involved if never done before.

Better still, buy a newer model car thats ready to go. just weigh up the pros and cons and work out how much time and cost is involved before you do anything.

No selling for me, I like my 5link coil rear and soon to be coil front. No 4runners with 5L unfortunately. Im actually pretty lucky in having a hilux specific wreckers down the road so I may have to go down and tell him im on the look for a 5LE hilux with a caved in rear end but complete front. OM617 u wudnt hav a wiring diagram for the 5LE wud u by chance? Or no of a place which has a steady supply of 5LE front cuts??
Speaking of front cuts, got bids on a 185KW ATW (standard) jap spec WRX STi front cut for my RS liberty (so excited lol) :)

I've only got a diagram for my car but it's in French. The only place you could get a complete cut is form an importer. I've called a few and they can get em but usually only have crappy fast 4's and rotories in stock. Not my cup of tea, it used to be though...................... They would be hard to find at a wrecker.
I might wait a year till I go to Thailand and look there as there is a shite load available on the black market, and cheap. That's where they make the Hilux I believe.

I've got a basic one from a manual that i can probably scan for you if you want it.
I do agree. These 4runners are great 4x4's :)

I get it. LN46, thats it. Yeah, Runners are great. A mate of mine traded in for a 2000 Prado TD but now he says he should have kept the Runner. I think he has Financial problems.
As for the 5L in the Hilux thing, I think you should go with the standerd 5L or even a 3L if you can't find anything good or cheap. Don't forget you could always throw in a 5L crank and rods into a 3L which would basically turn it into a 5L. Or do up a 5L and turn it into a 6L??????? There are so many possibilities with the L series.

hehe 6L. I'm pretty sure that all hiluxs r japanese made other then a stint that toyota had with the models just b4 the new shape which were made in thailand, can defently tell on those models that ther not a japanese product. Hey nothing wrong with crappy fast fours, I love my EJ20T which has the fuel economy of a saturn V rocket lol.
hey josh does it have a basic pinout diagram of the ECU? If ur able to scan and post it wud be great. Cheers

No. They are all made in Thailand. The current model already came out there 1 year before it did here. And the previous model also came out with common rail.
'Thailand is the second biggest market for trucks since it’s a common sight in rural areas where most farm products are produced. The domestic sales for this year are forecast at 510,000 units as compared to the 651,000 units forecast in the United States.'
The Toyota plant has started operation last month and occupies 245 hectares or 605 acres of paddy fields, making Thailand as a major export base for small pickup trucks. Plant Manager Charnchai Suppayakom said, "We ship 4,000 right-hand drive Hilux trucks (http://www.articlesbase.com/automotive-articles/new-toyota-plant-in-thailand-138481.html?cn=autos&an=new-toyota-plant-in-thailand&aid=138481#) to Australia a month and another 2,000 of the left-hand version to Saudi Arabia." He also added that the factory’s initial 100,000 annual production capacity can be quadrupled to answer any increase in future export demand.
'There are 30 models in the line-up, priced from $20,990.'
'The idea is to create three vehicles, including a people mover, from the same basic mechanical package, saving money and allowing them all to be built at the one factory in Thailand.'
I don't want to be a know it all but these are just a few qoutes from some websites. It's a bit off topic but more utes are sold in thailand than here and a lot of them are crashed so there is a huge market in used parts especially Diesels.
