hi i've got a bj40 shortie that i cut down into a ute with a turbo'ed b diesel tried to put up pics all to big (have a page in the shed same as my username)I've been told that 60 ser or early 75 ser disk's and hub set up will fit on to a bj 40, also been told that 35's will rip off the steering arm that go's from steering box to the front. also do 3b and b diesels have the same intake manifold thanks 4 any help

using 60 series or very early 75 series (or solid axle hilux) swivel hubs is a very common way to gain disk brakes on a drum brake 40 series.
33+ inch tires are known to catch the relay rod (the steering rod you speak of).
you can either turn out the steering stops on the knuckle to limit the angle you can turn at full lock, keeping the tires off the relay rod, or you can just try to not hit it too often.'
the proper fix is to convert it to 60 series power steering, as this does away with the convoluted steering system, and replaces it with a strong box that only runs 2 rods, that are well clear of the tires.
not sure about b - 3b manifolds... i'm not a 4cyl diesel person

thanks mate is the 60 ser box hard to swap would i imagine the steering column would need to be swaped and new mount for box would i need to swap steering arms ball joints etc... guess i better start looking for a busted arse 60 ser in sa. thanks again for the info

I ran HZJ75 series ends on my old BJ40. Bigger cvs and good brakes! I ran 37s for years with no dramas rock crawling etc but then again a lawnmower was more powerful.....ran 4.88s.
A bloke who used to work for macquarie 4x4 ran a 60 with front HZJ75 ends running a V8 diesel and hadn't busted a CV at that stage, he ran the old girl in comps also (always busting the 60 cvs he said).
Couldn't answer the manifold question. good luck. ah.....i ran the 60 series power steer set up.

Yep, B and 3B manifolds are the same. The ports may be a different size but that is easy fixed.

it's not hard at all.
you need a different steering column (75 series or 55 series usually), you need an intermediate shaft (75 series works well. if you use a 55 series column, you also need the rag joint from a 80 series to adapt the splines). you need the steering arms and steering rods from a 60 series (or 75 series). you need some steel to plate the chassis and to make crush tubes with.
then of course the pump, box and lines.
that's not a how to, that's just a parts list.
so yes, if you get a busted 60 series, you'd be 9/10ths the way there.

always thought the HZJ75 knuckles were the same as 60. i know they run the same front diff as 80 series, but thought the knuckles were 60 series size.

couldn't tell you from exp bad rel but I would say there is because he went to the trouble to cut his 60 ends off and weld on HZJ75 ends..........he was the one who did the ends on my 40, really apart from the advantage of disc brakes I don't think I would have busted anything running that lawnmower engine!
I did see the 75 and 40 knuckles side by side.......big difference there. Not sure if my later model 42 has bigger knuckles. I think it has.....will have to check.

pretty much all the 40 series knuckles are the same (well after 1970 anyway). the opening the CV slides into is slightly smaller on the drum brake/early disk brake axles, but we're talking 1 - 2 mm. a kiss with the angle grinder will see later model CV's slide right in.
Just because someone goes to the trouble doesn't mean it's worth it. it'd probably work out easier to get a set of longfields from the states to suit the 40/60 series knuckles (same CV size), and be done with it.

mate if i was gunna do mine again i would put the diffs and all from a 60 in then you get the wider track as well, but the 60series swivel hubs do fit and are a great conversion you will find you can stop again

i have 60 diffs under my 40, and while they add width, it's not a simple proceedure to put them under there. (mine were pre setup when i got them otherwise i wouldn't have bothered)

I have done the power steer conv, rear disc brake conv on a full floating axle and have disc's on the front as well. If you need any info I'd be happy to help. I got all my 60's stuff for $300 at a wreckers...

got any info on the rear disk conversion for the FF axle??? what disks did you use etc. everything i've read about it involves semi floating axles, and calipers/rotors from the USA. would be very interested in rear disks
