Lads,

I have a new JK rubicon - how are they disconnecting the hubs when the're in 2wd mode?

Or aren't they..., if so can you get manual FW hubs

They are the same as all Jeeps since the re-release into Australia in 1994. They disconnect at the transfercase which means the front shaft and axles still spin. Great convenience though that you can select 4wd in seconds and keep going unlike free wheeling hubs or the auto locking ones which can have problems.

Thanks Gojeep, I understand how all this works and I couldn't see any mechanism in the front diff assy that disconnects the hubs - hence my question.

So if they don't come with hub disconnect or free wheeling hubs than are there any aftermarket ones for them? there doesn't seem to be a large enough hole in the wheel to let ones that would fit on a cruiser protrude through.

Tasar, a hub is the bit that the wheel studs are pressed into and in most part time 4wd's (non All or Full 4wd) you can get a doohicky that allow this hub to free-wheel so that when your in 2wd the front axles, diff and prop shaft can lie still instead of spinning with the wheels, the FWhubs save a bit of wear and fuel.

No free wheeling hubs for the JK that I am aware of. I felt the same as you when I first bought my Jeep in 95 but fine with it now. Saw some tests of before and after fitting free wheeling hubs with fuel usage and there was very little difference indeed. Wear is not a issue as not under load and actually helps keep everything lubricated which is a real problem for those with free wheeling hubs that dont lock them in often enough.

Solid Axle have a conversion kit that I saw the other day when I was there and it looked good. The only thing is you have to swap back to the older Jeep stud pattern rims.

It may not be up on the site yet. They're new and I happened to drop by to ask about something else and we got talking and he showed them to me. Give him a call (03) 9786 0056 for more details.

I spoke to Solid axels and they do this free spinner knit but its a full hub replacement which changes your stud pattern to 5 on 5.5", so you also have to get their replacement rear axles and new rims.

it costs $3000 to do - but you do end up with stronger hub assembley and Chromoly rear axels!
