View Full Version : 98 LN Hilux- Front wheels/tyres scrub on guards

First post here,
Since I've put new shoes on the Ute (BFGoodrich all-terrains) the front tyres scrub on the guards when on full lock, and the suspension is given a little, like when pulling into and reversing out of my driveway, and only at full lock. This has started to wear the mud flaps to a point where a whole is starting to appear. My truck is stock as they come, albeit some IPF's and a Bulbar to point the nose down even more.
Now I think the reason for this is the extra rubber on the tread of the tyres, previous rubber was Pirelli all-terrain Scorpions, and the lack of suspension in my IFS Hilux, no doubt the suspension has softened since I purchased the truck 18 months ago, I've taken her out quite a few times, Ourimbah State Forrest, The Wattigans etc, I live on the Central Coast NSW.
To the point- how can I fix this bar hacking into the truck with the angle grinder? I guess some new suspension with some lift, but $$$ constraints apply. I'd like to get under there and bash the body back a little so I can keep the flaps, the mud flaps help keep her clean. Can this be done?
Any help is much appreciated.
Thanks in advance,
Pat.

What size are the tyres?? 31s should fit under it standard with no lift. What you may find is that the torsion bars in the front have sagged as they do over time. Get it wound back up to standard height so that the car sits level and you shouldnt have any dramas. Its normally about $35 to wind up the bars and then another $35 for an alignment I have never paid over $70 to have it done. Hope this helps.

Yeah 31's on it, I'll ask my mate he's a mechanic he recons he can wind em up. Will that effect the handling though?
But maybe a better option is to get new torsion bars and shocks for the front end, the back end is sweet as. I don't really need lift i'm not that hard core, don't have the $$$. I'm saving for some lockers though, peace of mind and handwinching sux LOL!

I wouldnt recommend you get aftermarket torsion bars unless you have a winch or similiar. Mine have just been changed and the stockos did a great job I just needed to wind them up once every 12 months its not a big drama.

If you wind them up too high it will affect ride for what you are doing I dont think you ill notice much difference.
